I'm still a newbie. Bought an '05 and really love it. I had it in for some minor servicing and the Caddy dealer loaned me a car with XM Radio in it. I don't see that my XLR has it and don't know if it ever did. If i want to have this, I know I have to subscribe, but will it work on my radio, or was it an option that you had to buy when you originally bought the car?

Obviously I could use some help and info.

Great response Floyd, but it could still have XM even if the display dosent show it, if the Tech dissconected the cable in the trunk for the XM receiver (So it doesnt show XM for people that didnt want to put their antenna on the trunk) it will not display the XM band. You would then have one button for FM1 & one for FM2, instead of an XM equipped car FM1/FM2.

You can also look on the build plackard on the underside of the right compartment well to see if you have the "U2K" option. If not, it is not cost effective (almost 2k parts & labor) to install.

Thank you for the info. Right now I have one button for FM1 & one for FM2, that shows on the screen. I'll check the placard in the morning before the temp hits 100 degrees again (Atlanta)

Well, I couldn't stand to wait until tomorrow morning. I tried to find the plackard on the underside of the right compartment, looked under the hood but can't spot it anywhere. Can anyone be more specific as to the whereabouts of the build placard?

RichH,

I guess he is referencing the compartment in the trunk on the right side where the Service Parts Identification Display or SPID label is located. There is a velco attached cover to the compartment. You lift the cover off and it has a placard on the back side; opposite side from the carpet.

All the "as built" options for that vehicle are on SPID, down to the paint code at the very bottom.

Oops, I forgot to mention, in the cargo area in front of the partition on the right side.

I didn't know if my 05 was ordered with XM, but when I opened the cubby hole in the right rear of the trunk it contained a box with the antenna and instructions.
Still struggling with drilling a hole in the trunk lid, but it contained a template along with the antenna painted red.
I thought I read somewhere that the 08 has the XM antenna mounted in the trunk, so I am waiting for more infromation on that.

Uintah,

The word is that the "hidden" antenna you have heard of is in the rear view mirror, as is the NorthStar antenna. I don't believe they are hiding it in the trunk. If you want XM on your vehicle, you'll have to drill and install what you have or spend a great deal having the interior modified to 06 and beyond configuration.

No U2K code on the list. Looks like the original buyer was a bit light in the pocketbook.:banghead

Thanks Ken.
End of August, our 37th wedding anniversary, we head for Coeur d’Alene Idaho. I would like XM for the trip. So tomorrow I'll do a trial fit and ask for the wife's approval, the car was her surpise anniversary present.

I should point out, had she declined it was going to default to me.

Hi folks,

quick question... If I've got the correct build code, and the XM receiver is disconnected from the head unit as suggested, where can I find the receiver? I've read on this forum that it's located behind the park distance sensor readout lights.. Is that definately the case? Can I access it by simply removing the shelving in the center storage compartment? Or is it more complicated? The only other access I see would be to remove the entire trim section where the passenger/driver rollbars are.. Any input would be very helpful...

thanks guys..

The XM receiver is located in the trunk. You can actually see it if you look in the center forward and up. It's right behind the center storage compartment in between the seats.

SilverX is correct. You can get at it either in the trunk or take out the center storage between the seats and you'll see it. If your car has the build code the unit is probably already hooked up to the receiver, you just need to hook up the antenna and subscribe to XM. (I know mine was when I installed the antenna--hated to drill the trunk but oh well) If you haven't already checked in the trunk area on the right is a small secret compartment (right bottom of trunk) that is where my XM antenna was stashed when I got the car. It's pretty easy to do just follow the instructions in the box. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself take it to your dealer and have them install it.

I just bought a 2005 w/o XM. I had an aftermarket XM unit installed, which records music, lets me play MP3's and play audio books for road trips. Works great. The XM signal is directly attached to the antenna input. The satellite puck is on top of the dash in the right corner-- no problems.

Sirius Instead

Just installed the Sirius Unit in the truck where the XM unit would go if my 2004 had an XM unit . No unit, but did have the plug in harnes sitting waiting for me to plug it in. Ant is now on the dash, very small about 2" All works great!:party

Hey all,

Just a piece of interesting info I wanted to offer up.. I know in other threads on this forum people have asked about installing Factory XM receivers they've bought on ebay, etc. These receivers are "locked" to the VIN of the vehicle they've been removed from.. As I understoond it, when the car is started the BCM in the car pings the XM receiver and if the receiver returns the wrong VIN you'll get the infamous XM Theftlocked on your radio..

My bit of info is this - I purchased one of these receivers off of ebay and installed it in my X just for the heck of it. I of course got the XM Theftlocked message but decided to leave the receiver installed anyway. I checked my XM function once a day just for giggles and kept getting the XM Theftlocked message until day 8ish.. When I switched over I got the XM preview channel.. Anyway long story short I activated the radio and It's been working great for the last 2 months or so.. I'm a bit baffled as to why it's working.. I'd be curious to see if another XLR owner installed the OEM receiver and had the same results...

Ok I finally decided to have the wart antennae installed on my XLR but the dealer couldnt do it, he said its missing the "Template" for drilling into the trunk? Are there and aftermarket antennae attachments that i can use to connect to the module in my trunk?

Duke,
Just tell your dealer to get the template and stop with the excuses. Sometimes these dealers drive me crazy.
