Yup, just for looks. The XLR gets it's air through the wheel wells.

No, I don't think you can cut out an area to induct air, you'd lose the integrity of the grille.

I see to bad, but has anyone painted their "V" race mesh grill Black? I kinda like how it looks on this 360 walk around on Cadillacs website:
http://www.cadillac.com/cadillacjsp/model/gallery.jsp?model=xlrv&year=2008&primary=3&id=2

if not can someone good in Photoshop paint the grill of a Black XLR-V in Black?
I think it will look good.

Thanx

Actually, it might make the (black) "V" look even tougher! I'd consider trying it myself!

Good suggestion! :thumbs

Ya Know, we are trying very hard here to let him know that it just won't work and he is going to have to live with the beautiful grill on the V until the 09's come out, then he might have a chance of fitting the standard 09 in the grill area of the V, But. I will repeat it for the 10th time, it's not functional.

The air for the radiator on an XLR comes up from under the front facia. Air hits the rubber air dam or chin spoiler and is then directed up and through the radiator.
On the V cars air comes up through the vents in bottom of the front facia, through either the oil cooler or transmission cooler (oil cooler is on the drivers side and the transmission cooler is on the passenger side) and out through the vents in the inner fender liner.

Doesn't the intercooler get its air through the lower grill?

Let's not forget the air for the air filters which are blocked until you remove the liner behind the grill, now you get ram air to your air filters, which in my case are Volant air cleaners.

Yes Dr................anda as you point out the chrome strip doesn't work.
So this is a mock up of a V? Before you quote V series fast, I want to see some paper from a drag strip.
Why didn' this guy buy a V,especially after they dropped in price?
Confused Bobo
I guess I must be a little confused about all the talk about the XLR-V grill not fitting on a regular XLR.... We did a grill swap for a customers XLR and it fit just fine.

You cant use the chrome strip that goes on the leading edge of the hood, but it actually looks pretty sharp without it. This customers XLR had a V-Series hood installed later (not pictured). Just FYI, the car will have all the performance goodies done to it and be V-Series fast!

Thank you,

So If the "V" style grill fits the XLR, then the XLR grills will also fit the "V" am I right Doc?

Also do you think there is a way to cut the plastic cover behind the base XLR grill to allow air to the radiator?

cant the chrome strip that goes on the leading edge of the "V" hood be removed?

Finally did your customer paint his "V" grill black? Looks sharp do you have more pix of it?

Thanx

Q8,
Never did this to my 04, but here is the post of mine with pictures to show how to remove the matting that let's more air in, very close to ram-air. other pages in this post will answer anymore questions,

My .02:iagree
Cutting the slats isn't going to give hardly any air and will probably break anyway. Some guys just have to do it.
Bobo
One could say that. We have never tried to do that, but I would certainly think it would work. Now if you are actually going to do this grill swap to your XLR-V I would strongly recommend against it, as the drastic reduction in cooling could cause an overheating condition...

The design of the horizontal slats on the XLR grill are not real friendly to being cut open as they are rather close together. But 1 test is worth 1000 opinions.

The chrome strip along the front of the leading edge of the V-series hood can be removed. However there is a small recessed area that will have to addressed if the strip is permanently removed. You could have a body shop fill in the area and repaint the hood...

This customer wanted to go with a black chrome wire mesh grill. This way it would match the finish chosen for his wheels. The car looks great in person. We should have more images soon as we have more work to do still...

Thank you,

Mesh grills

I think we are getting confused here.
Two mesh grills exist: One is the the OEM grill for the V-series. This will not fit a base XLR. The other is the "aftermarket" E&G mesh grill, which is designed for the base car, to simulate the look of the V-series. These two are easily distinguished from one another: the OEM mesh grill places the Cadillac crest directly on the mesh, whereas the E&G grill places it on a black surround.
The base car being modified by D3 is using an E&G grill; the crest is placed on a black surround. The chrome strip for the leading edge of the hood that came with the grill could have been installed on the car shown. I have noticed, however, that this strip often isn't shaped properly, and doesn't fit flush with the sheetmetal at the edges of the strip. Mine has this problem ( the ends stand away a little) and so do many others that I have inspected.

Thanks for the clarification. Hard to believe GM would do otherwise, really, but you never know. I don't, anyway.

Out of curiousity, did you happen to look at the back of the base grille when it was removed? From the engine compartment, there appears to be a separate piece of thin black plastic mounted behind the silver slats/surround on locator pins. That appears to be what actually fills the holes in the grille when seen from the front.

I can't see the entire assembly, but it almost looks as if the sheet could be removed without compromising the frame (the unit would have to be removed in order to do so, of course).
