XLR or 500SL

Do any of you think that the XLR will make it. Just wondering because the Benz is quite a nice car to drive. Fast and a beautifully smooth ride. Since the XLR is supposed to compete in that luxury class, how do you guys feel the XLR will do? As for my opinion, I would much rather go with the Benz since its been around much longer than the XLR and the price range is about the same. Therefore, the only way I see people driving the XLR over the Benz is that 1. Its American and 2. Because people will want to be the first to own one. After looking at the pictures for a while I don't think is a very good looking car. I guess I have to see it in person.

Should do OK, but I still think the SL will be a much smoother car when it comes to trannies :yesnod But handeling should be better on the Caddy with the magnetic suspension, so who knows:banghead

:iagree
I think one big key will be GM's willingness to stick with it. From what I've seen so far it looks pretty darn good for a first year model.

It's bound to get even better as time goes by.

Yeah, I don't think this car will go the way of the Allante. At least I hope they learned their lesson from it.
lb's make them different

the XLR will weigh less. the benz is like 4000+lbs I think.... whats the XLR? 3500? about the same HP on the SL500 as the XLR.

:iagree The XLR might be faster but if the Mercedes weighs 4000+ LBS then doesnt that mean it will ride better than the XLR:confused
All of the UN fighting makes me want to buy American. I would still consider a German car. If Mercedes were made in France I wouldn't look at it twice! :reddevil
What the XLR will be worth 3 years old comapred to what the 500SL will be worth in 3 years I think will tell the story! The Benz WILL holds it's value much better and therefore be the more sensible car to buy! I personally think the Benz is nicer anyway!

Isn't ride a function of the ratio of unsprung to sprung weight, not the absolute weight of a vehicle?

Since when does a heavier car handle better?:confused

ride <> handling
ride = comfort, smoothness
handling = control, quickness

...as I understand it.

So wouldn't heavier=less quick? I don't know, just wagering a guess here:cheers

Well, duh. But VETTEC6 said The XLR might be faster but if the Mercedes weighs 4000+ LBS then doesnt that mean it will ride better than the XLR -- he didn't say anything about handling.

that's a different way of selecting a car. funny how you base your car off of political views and not performance. i would buy a mercedes because of it's german engineering.

I own a Corvette. My wife drives an Audi. I didn't buy either because of where it's made. I bought my Corvette because it's an awesome sports car. The heritage is important but not the key factor for me. I can understand the sentiment towards French cars. Not that I'd actually have to make that decision anyway. I mean, who would seriously look at a Peugot? :glol
