Would you buy another XLR?:smash

I am still having problems with my XLR. "top getting stuck, oil leaks, head light problems, etc."

I thought I was getting a handle on these things this last week but I guess not. They have had the car now for about 3 weeks and was told I would have it back yesterday.
Did not happen. Now being told maybe Monday or Tuesday. They are telling me they have to start over on the oil leak problem.
I called GM and said they needed to get someone over there to help these guys out with my car or they could have it back seeing as this was the Third or Fourth time for most of these problems. :banghead

They told me if I did not what the car just say the word and they would start the buy back. Wow they will take the car back instead of sending a tech. out....:nopity

Anyway IF I do this should I or would YOU buy another XLR?
I love the way the car looks, drives etc. I really don't know of another car that is equal to this one.

Are the new 2007 XLRs going to be any better then my 2004? :confused

Anyone know who has the best price on 2007s?

Hi Blaise, long time we didn`t talk:cheers

troubles with my 04 XLR

check engine light came on during the first 10.000 miles many times - they`ve connected it to their computer to reset it but it allways came on again but anything was correct - they couldn`t find nothing wrong!!!

the oil-leak on the front of the engine - this was really a big thing!!! My car was almost 4 weeks at my dealer with the engine out of the car, the motor was standing upside down near my car and they`ve had all the parts and sealings they needed beside 20 screws (piece $ 10.00). When this screws arrived my car was fixed in one day. I really was so mad about this that I`ve planned to sell it and get a other car, well I didn`t and that`s good because since then (was in Febr. this year.) I`ve had no more single problem with my car. I made since then about 8000 miles, operated the top maybe 100 times (never any problems there)
and the "check engine" light never came ON again.

the likes of my XLR

one of the nicest cars on the road - no car is similar

very fast ( get it to 180 mph on our autobahns)

good gas mileage

love the keyless entry

love my heated and cooled seats

BTW in June this year I´ve had the chance to drive Bob`s (standby on this forum) XLR V and I was very impressed. We drove from LA to ABQ for the XLR Rendezvous and the overall build quality got even better on his 06 model. The engine/transmission (6 speed auto) is just a dream and the 443 hp let you fly away. One thing I didn`t like was the speed governor at 158 mph, we`ve tried it out two times (once Bob, once me) but that was it!!! - Hope the export model doesn`t have it like my 04.

I buy a V when it`s available here in europe, maybe an XLR V or an STS V.

harrysxlr,

Glad to hear they got your car fixed. It looks like I have the same oil leak. They are telling me the leak is on the timing chain cover/s but then said it does not have timing chains. Anyway its an oil leak on the front of the motor somewhere.

I was going to use the car in a local parade today and then my wife and I were going to take a two day trip on Monday to try and have some fun but now I will have to cancel both.

I will start looking at different type of cars today on the internet and then start going to see them Monday and Tuesday.

Motorboat,
when I read this it seems to me you have the same problem with the oil-leak I`ve had. If it is, they cannot fix it while the motor is installed, that means they have to take it out. Mine didn`t lost oil, I`ve only had allways an oil film going from the oil-pan backwards (from driving winds) when I looked under the car.

I know from mine it got to do something with this 20 expensive screws, guess something was wrong with them on the first 04 models. When they took my engine out an engeneer from Cadillac-Europe worked with on my car to see what the reason for this mess would be.

I´m glad my dealership did such a good work, not one time I had to see them up again because something was wrong - all was done perfect.

Did you know the 07 standard XLR comes with the 6 speed automatic too?

I feel sorry for you, you have to cancel both of your plans - but things just can get better:yesnod

Have a nice weekend

Would buy another tomorrow

During the first few months I had my 04 I had several minor and two major problems with the car. Neither of the major problems were exclusive to the XLR, for instance Rear End Leak and Valve Problem in the Northstar. Had a top problem that I created and have had the headlights replaced for the overheating problem. Other than updates thats it. It is a wonderful car. Nothing like it on the road turns heads. As my daughter says when she drives it, it is a guy magnet.

Since I am happily married I don't care if it is a chick magnet.

Bottom line it is the most fantastic car I have ever owned.

Never again... Too much junk and too many sensors to go wrong or out of adjustment. Its like a tempermental child or worse, a woman. You never know what you might do or say and it would set her off...

My S500 Mercedes Priceless... Should have bought an SL500 but kept thinking Cadillac would hammer out he issues with this car. Battery charging, sensors not working to open or close stuff, leaks...:nodno

It's Funny but I think they may have a handle on most of this stuff. My V is a 1000 times better than my 04. I had a stuck vavle on my supercharger and that was just breifly.
Then again we have members that have 04's and 05's that have had little or no problems.
I wonder if it's the line guys and gals putting these machines together and some time their just having a bad day.

I was just discussing this with someone last night... I think I would take a car built by a robot over a handbuilt car anytime. I found more window adhesive leaking out of the front windshield along with the quarter windows I had posted a while back... Someone really liked their adhesive gun when putting together my 06...

Oh, and someone hand wrote a bunch of stuff on the inside of both front wheel wells with a yellow marker that I can't seem to scrub off...

Do it again.. humm.. ask me in a few more months.....

Personally I would by another XLR and am currently fighting the urge for a V. I would not by another first year model from any manufacturer. Last one I did was in 97 and I don't want to go through that again dispite the fact the dealer service on that vehicle was excellent. Before you go with another brand check their boards. I think you will find their owner experiences no better and in many cases worse.

Statistics

I agree. you really must know the denominator to udnerstand the incidence of problems (just like in medicine).

To the person having the issue, it is 100% problem. but if they are one in 1000, then its a 0.1% incidence.

If you look at almost every model (from whatever company), the first year has many many issues. As the model matures (and possibly, the learning curve of the technicians and dealers), there are fewer and fewer issues. Consumers Reports has nice stats on this.

I think the only ones with acceass to all the numbers (Cadillac), would not be likely to reveal the bottom line. However, maybe someone can ask?

My wife and I bought two 2004's, then sold one and bought a 2005 (new color) and then we each bought 2006's (new colors). We have been very happy with them and have had no major problems. Whenever you purchase a brand new model (especially with the electronics of the XLR) you can expect a few gliches. I would imagine I would feel differently if we had experienced some of the problems that some owners have mentioned on the forum. Since we haven't, we are happy and will probably continue to purchase XLRs.

We are looking forward to Rendezvous II at the factory to see what they have in store for 2008.

It is right what you say Jim:iagree
but after two 04`s - one 05 and again two 06`s XLR`s isn`t it time to buy the first XLR V:) :flag

But if not now I might see Jean or Jim in a V next year at XLR Rendezvous II in Bowling Green/Ky:glol

We have a 2005 XLR and have had a few minor problems including needing the battery replaced within the first few days of ownership and the rear end noise which was corrected with a fluid change. We should note that we have only 3,800 miles on the car.

We absolutely love our XLR and would have no hesitation whatsoever about purchasing another one IF we did not read the information in this forum. Frankly, because of what we read here about people having problems we find ourselves wondering if it’s only a matter of time and increased mileage before we begin encountering the dreaded front-of-the-engine oil leak or a malfunction of the top. That’s depressing.

But then on the other hand we recognize that people experiencing problems are the ones most likely to be posting as they seek information in terms of what has been experienced by others with similar situations and / or simply want a platform from which to ventilate their anger, disappointment or perhaps just frustration. That does tend to skew the perspective and we find we have to remind ourselves of that from time to time.

A real concern we have about our current and any future XLR is the competence of the local Cadillac dealership to properly maintain it and address problems which might arise.

However, all things considered, at this juncture we definitely would purchase another XLR and have given more than casual thought to acquiring a V.

Best regards,
Ed and Sandra

Hi Ed and Sandra,
you know the problems I`ve had with my 04 and the real problem was the oil-leak but my dealership did a real good job on this. I was very close in Febr. to sell it and get me a car with a different nameplate but since then - NOT ONE PROBLEM anymore and since then I`ve made about 10.000 km ( 6000 miles).

I did never had a problem with my top! Yes, I think I would buy another one but the one with the V on.:)

I wouldn't be surpirsed to see Jim take delivery of his V at the factory to top off our tour. :yesnod
Kent,
I don`t think a plant-delivery is possible for XLR`s as it is for Vette`s. Never heard of that but you`re right, as far we know Jim he will do it!!!!
We still remember when he bought his new 07 Escalade ESV at Galles while we were there with the XLR`s.

We`ll see next August:glol

Too true!!! I used to post every week or two, when I had 2 or 3 problems during the first 18 months of ownership.:cuss

Now, during the second 18 months of ownership, I haven't had any problems, so I don't have much reason to write!:party

OF COURSE most of the people on a car forum will discuss the problems--its not very useful to say "car ran great again, today"!!!:confused

Problems..........problems.........problems....... ........

This forum has gotten depressing! I have Over $100K invested in a car that you guys are making me afraid to drive!! :crazy
I'm starting to cringe every time I take the top down.....and I've never had a top problem! I listen for noises that aren't there.....I look for oil spots on my garage floor.......got a bad case of forum over load!!
I LOVE MY V ...greatest car ever....7000 miles, few minor problems..... but what car dosen't?
I put 30K+ on my 04XLR so yes, I did do it again. It had some problems, but I expected that going in..... it was the first year out and it was well worth working through the bugs.

We need to spend more time talking about customizing, aftermarket, randeavous, racing,......fun stuff:thumbs

I had a 2004 and 2006 and now 2007 V.

My 2004 was never in the shop once
My 2006 had a faulty seat lumbar (didnt work) - no biggie and seat slipped a little (this was annoying) but 2 minor issues is really nothing
My 2007 is brand new.

My Wifes Volvo, BMW and MB over past 5 years were always in the shop.
