This subject was mentioned in the "touch up paint thread", but really merits one of its own.

Our first granddaughter was born on Friday, 8 July, in Dallas while the bride was off on a "girls weekend" in San Diego. (Local SD economy will surge.) The XLR hadn't been driven for while, so I threw an overnight bag in the car Saturday am, and started making a northbound Xenon Blue streak on I-45.

Well, I didn't even hear it (but I'm old), but somewhere along the way I picked up a road stone on the windshield. One of those nasty ones that has a crack. As the mercury crept up and past the century mark, the crack expanded to about a foot in length.

Like pamlicopirate, I am in need of a new windshield. Anyone else been through this? Hints, sources?

Other things to report: No problem with hot cup holders. Despite reaching 101 degF, while blasting along about 90mph for three hours, the cup holders were cool as a cucumber. My console heat seems isolated under the map compartment.

Also, I spotted another XLR - the first Xenon Blue that I have seen (other than my own). It was southbound on I-45, south of Huntsville about 10 am.

We lucked out on the only "deep" crack in our windshield, I was able to get it repaired before the cracking moved beyond a dime-size spot and it has stopped spreading. I have several pockmarks from small stones and I know it is only a matter of time.

Windshield repair - repacement

I know your pain. I picked up a quarter sized star burst on the freeway. The rock must have come from outer space, possibly a meteorite because there was no other vehicles in close proximity. The burst was on the passenger side but my vision was tear blurred. Repair was not an option due to the size.

After consulting my insurance company “use anyone you like, you pay $300 have them bill us the remainder”. Dealer recommended a couple sources.

Making it short, I ended up with All Star Glass. I’m not sure that information will due you much good. Their advert. states Serving all of California. I was very apprehensive. They asked lot solid questions. Heads up display? Rain sensing? GPS antenna? On Star? Etc.

Bottom line. Two men show up in my driveway with a new GM, OEM windshield with all of the exact same part numbers, logos, trademarks etc. as the original wind shield. Two hours later they completed the driveway install, (no shade tree) and it was literally perfect. No excess adhesive, fingerprints and all trim replaced perfectly.

I highly recommend this company if they offer their services in your area. The young installers where neat, clean and courteous. This repair was done in April of this year and I remain fully satisfied.
The total invoice price was $1448.06. I paid $300 of that amount.

Toad...I've had similar good experience with all star glass. Highly recommend them.

When the "chips" are small, don't overlook having them professionally repaired. Most insurance companies will waive the deductible and pick up the entire tab for repair without any deductible. :flag

My insurance company picked up the tab for the repair, the guys polished and smoothed out a couple of small pockmarks while the were at it. My agent told me that if the repair does not hold up or we later become unhappy with it, all we will have to do is pick up the deductible and he will pay for a replacement.

Rain Sensing Feature

My windshield wipers tend to activate periodically when I accelerate in no rain situations! Has anyone experienced this? it doesn't happen that often but enough to cause concern!

The manual says that intermittent wiper action is normal operation (even without rain) if you leave the setting on automatic.

Happens to me only once in a great while (once every few weeks).

At what point are they not repariable?

Is a .50 cent star burst too big?? :cry

It may be as long as it you get it filled before it begins spreading outward. The guy who patched mine told me that as long as the damage remains somewhat circular and centralized he can fix them. You can still see a slight haze where he repaired mine, but so far it's holding together.

mine's just inside left of the heads up, so I hope it will blend.

I carry a $1000. deductible, so the alternative is not pleasant uke

well they did a great job, noticeable only if you know where to look.
Fortunately its down low about 1.5" above the black boarder, lower left corner.

What I hadn't noticed we're the three paint chips where the rock skipped across the hood on its way up!
