Now here is a subject nearest and dearest my heart. But everyone loves what they use and of course theres is the best. The following info is based on my personal use of cleaning cars mostly mine since the early 60's and I have tried most products so here goes!
#1 In most cases I NEVER EVER WASH MY CARS! bold statement huh! The only exception is when they get really muddy or extrememly and I mean that extremely buggy say from a bug storm! I tend to keep cars a long time and I dont want all that water rotting, rusting everything. Then I only use Maguires car wash its the green one not the everyday red one. And a lambs wool pad. I have 7 cars I bet I wash maybe one car possible one time in a year.I never wax!
#2 I use several products mainly because I sell them and some i just have a lot of. It was for years a product called"DRY- WASH AND GUARD" Its sold by guys like me who sell to others sort of like amway does, just different. Its about $40 a qt and you get a hand pump sprayer to fill you can do your car about 15-20 times. I also use now a product called "ECO-SHEEN" By Fuel Freedom International another amway type co. but they also seel fuel tablets that I use in all 20 of my trucks and cars and it really does increase my mileage as mush as 3-4 mpg more. But thats another story. The way I use these products is I just dust off the car with a California duster. shake the bottles well pump them up spray them on and wipe an area about the size of 1/2 the hood using micro fibre cloths only. One to put on one to wipe off. Cars totally done in no more then 15-20 min with the best shine you have ever seen and never scratches. I know you dont believe me but I am a natioal Rolls Royce Judge and I do other Judging and I have won national awards. My cars are always the shinest on the field. These are not waxes but polymers and they protect fantastic they have ZERO silicones in them. The companys that sell them have made millions because the products really work. I also use there tire cleaners makes them look brand new with a black satin sheen not these high glossy tires. When judging I always deduct for shinny tires!
#3 I have one exception to theses rules I own a triple black 1990 RUF car a BTR C-4 a 205 mph st car. A current replacement car would cost well over 1/2 mil! The reason I even tell you this is to show you I am serious about what I use on these cars. I did the car over about 3 yeras ago and its so black and shinny I cant ever wash it, wipe it or dust it or it leave those micro spyder web scratches you see on all black cars in the sun. I was at wits end trying everthing then buffing it all off due to scratches. I was at a show told this guy what I had ,he gave me this product called " Astro Shield" www.astroshield.com out of NYC and said "heres a qt can take it home, if it works send me 10 bucks if not throw it away"! Now there a sales offer you just cant turn down. The only problem was the car needed to be washed 1st! AHHHHHHHH! well I hosed it off drove down the street to blow it off let the dam thing water spot all over. Then applied to the entire car with a micro cloth and wiped off with a special thick micro fibre from Maguires i needed 2 of them! It is a fantastic finish. I do need to do this ever time I clean it or I will get those scratches. So i do not drive it a lot maybe 1200 mi a yr tops.
#3 I like Simachrome for wheels and chrome but really only something like windex should be used on chrome since it is micro thin and all cleaners are abrasive. I also own a big garage with a lift so after ever trip I wipe off the bottoms of my cars! You must understand Cars like Antique Rolls and Bentley have Bijur systems thats a pedel under the dash you press ever 100 mi and it greeses the car. So the bottoms get real bad real fast.
I have other steps I do for different things like using Maguires paint cleaners to get off pollution and fading. I also use Maguirs final inspection for quick details.
This was long so Just ask I will tell. Thanks all Jim F

Jim,

Are you going to BG, and if so are you bringing some of your "wares" for all of us to see and buy? I too am very "picky" about what I use. I don't have anywhere near the stable you have, but like to make my cars and bikes look better than everyone elses.

waxes

I will try and bring what I can in the SPACE provided. When I show you this stuff which BTW had been out there about 10+ years you just wont believe it. I have wax ojn my shelf in fact many of them but usuall use them when I buff out refinshed wood interiors then need to buff them back a bit more sheen!
I even take new car orange peel use 2000 grit wet paper then buff out to a show car shine. I know that takles guts you just need to start with the finest grits so you wont go thru the finish. Jim

Waxing

Before you wax your car you want to find out what condition the finish is in. An old detailer's trick is to put your hand in a plastic bag and drag it across the surface. That will tell real quick if there is surface contamination. If so, you need to use a clay bar. This process removes the dirt and grime that is "embedded" in the surface of the clear coat. You do not want to wax that in. If you have, then you want to go back and polish the surface, which gets rid of the waxes. Its easy to screw up a cars surface, if you don't know the proper way to care for it.

It's real name is "Semichrome" and I have been using it for years. One thing I did stop using many years ago was any and all Amway products since I realized over time what a ripoff the products were.

The bottom line is pretty simple - find a care care product that matches your lifestyle and stick to it.

I have a hard time believing rufcar has found (and is selling) a car care product I have not found on my own and either dismissed out of hand or adopted as a useful addition to my care care product line.

I apologize for being blunt, but some of your statements run against the grain and your spelling leaves much to be desired, in most instances you mis-spell the products you are promoting.

UPDATE - Oh my God, I just spent a moment checking out your website. Your photos show you using standard newspaper for carpet covers. If my memory is correct, that is dyed wool carpet, which newsprint will transfer to quite easily. That tells me you should stick to refinishing cabinets.

Finishes

mswain, Thanks for your comments. 1st yes my spelling sucks always did sorry. My web site is www.restorationsunlimited.org and I have no Idea of what you are talking about "Carpet Covers" please fill me in on that one. Next I run a multi million dollar restoration co and I do not need to promote those products for myself, you all can purchase them on your own. Next I am the Nat/l President of the Rolls Royce Foundation so I do know a little about what I am talking about. Like I stated earlier everyone has what they like. I was giving you advise based on my award winning experience.
There is a man out there in CA by the name of Gary Wales he owned a 1947 Bentley "Franay" body and won every major concours show in the US and he used and represented the "Dry-Wash and Guard co." he used that product over 10 years or more. So its been in CA that long. In fact it is made in NV.
All I can tell you is the products work fantastic an require the least amout of work I have ever seen. Thanks for you comments and sorry I cant spell. I barely got out of HS! Jim

waxes

Back to waxes and cleaners, there are many many products out there for just about any application you can think of. I have several sites that I like that cater to detailers that have great products. My son is a car painter and he gives me an ear full when I want to put something on the finish. When painting, he has to remove all the clear coat protectants and waxes before he touches the car. Any residue left on the finish will fish eye the paint and other terms that I have no idea what they mean. So be careful of what you put on the cars finish. Many enthusiasts prefer the shine from Carnauba waxes. It is a deeper, richer shine and tends to mask and hide minor swirls in the paint. While Caranuba has the highest melting point of all natural waxes it does start to melt at 180 degrees F. A dark color vehicle parked in the sun on a summer day can have a sustained paint temperature exceeding 200 degrees f!

A good rule of thumb is to expect 50% of your Carnauba wax layer to be gone after 30 days, 75% after 60 days and 95% gone after 90 days. If you use a carnauba wax, you should plan on waxing your car four (4) times a year. You can extend the waxes life expectancy by parking indoors, or using a car cover.
Synthetic waxes contain man made polymers with melting points in the thousands of degrees F. These coatings can last 6 to 9 months or longer. Some of these products bead water while others “plate” the surface causing water to sheet off. This lack of a visual cue (beading water) often makes it difficult to determine when to re-apply synthetic products. A good rule is to wax your car once in the spring and again late fall. This should give your car good protection all year long.

Finishes

Galen, All The Item I Used Are Certified As Paintable. Yes, I Am Aware Of All The Silicone's Used In Everything. The Worst Is Pledge. If You Get That Stuff On Wood Then Saw The Wood In Half And Finish It ,the Fish Eyes Will Still Come Through! In Most Paint Shops They Have Car Detailers In The Same Building Many Bays Away And That Even Shows Up In The Finishes.

and the Verdict is ...

Meguiars .... we took the car in to the corvette body shop that we used here in the San Diego area .... the owner of the shop - Gene Townsend (he has been a corvette specialist for 50 years) - used Meguiars #7 .... and then we will put Meguiars #26 over it .... that was his pick, and the car looks great .... he likes the product for black cars. We also saw it on a red motorcyle .... the red was so deep you could drown in it. Comments???:yesnod

Not being familiar with the products rufcar has mentioned, they may even be better, but I've owned five Corvettes since 1986, before the two XLRs, and I've always had excellent results with Meguiars. There were also a couple of Harleys through the years.

It will be interesting to see the products/results when we arrive in BG. . .
