I bought a 2005 with about 5,000 miles on it two months ago. Over the years I have had several Alfa's, three Maserati's, and one Ferrari. I thought I was selling out by buying a GM product, but I fell in love with the lines the first time i saw one. It ranks with the 41 and 55 Continentals as being among the most gorgeous cars ever made in the U.S. As it turns out, I can't remember being more in love with any of my Italian beauties. I have become obsessed with the XLR to the point of going out to the garage and staring at it before I go to bed!

No problems so far, the performance is astounding, it is much more Vette than Caddy.

I love the gadgets -- but-- so much to break, sooner or later, and repairs will be EXPENSIVE. I am concerned for instance about the roof mechanism, the keyless ignition, the rheomagnetic shocks, etc.

I did not purchase certification, since the car has about another year of factory warranty. I only drive it on weekends in good weather, so will put relatively few miles per year on it.

What are my options, in terms of getting an extended warranty toward the end of the current standard one? Are there choices? Does anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks.

Cadillac Major Guard Warranty

Rob,
First congrats on the XLR, since you didnt have the car certified the warranty that goes along with the status is no longer available (Certification is NOT an extended warranty, it is an extension of the new car warranty), since it must be done by the selling Cadillac dealer prior to purchase. What you have available to you is the next best, Cadillac Major Guard.

As long as you are under the original 4yr. or 50,000 miles, you are eligible for many types of policies. They vary on length of term and mileage, with various deductables. Contact your dealer BEFORE your original warranty expires.

For those that were concerned about the top mechanics, it is all covered under the Major Guard, do not take ANY other type of policy.

Thank you

warranty questions

Allen,

Thanks for the info. I looked at your website, so I know that you know what the deal is. But I'm not sure I understand what you wrote -- even without "certification" my dealer assured me that I am covered by the original warranty until May 08, and the GM warranty booklet, page 4, states "this warranty...is provided to the original and any subsequent owners of the vehicle during the warranty period."

I did look into extended warranties on line and the Major Guard is definitely the way to go. I got a quote online and it's way below what the dealer wanted for an extended warranty. I assume it's legit, but please let me know if you or anyone else has heard otherwise. Also, I am not clear what advantage there is to signing up now as opposed to waiting until the last month of my factory warranty, if indeed I am covered as I believe I am.

Thanks.

Aer,
I have heard some horrific stories about extended warranties not sold through the dealer.........be careful of those low costs, they don't cover everything. After all, why would they be so cheap.Bob

Extended Warranty

Allen,

I'm not talking about the junk mail warranty offers. The one I'm thinking about claims to be a franchised GM dealer, and according to his website, he is selling the authentic GMPP. (http://www.gm-auto-mall.com/) .

I have two questions for you, if you would be so kind--

1. As a dealer yourself, do you know of anyway to verify that this guy (Bob Pion) is a legitimate dealer?
2. Is there any compelling reason to buy the extended warranty now, as opposed to waiting toward the end of the factory warranty in spring 08, thus pushing up the final termination date of whichever plan I choose by about a year? His website states that the plan becomes more expensive as the car ages, but just to check, I requested quotes for a 2004 and a 2005 XLR and got exactly the same prices.

As far as your question as to how he could sell them so cheaply, I suspect that he makes his money on huge volume, selling the plans nationally, as opposed to dealers who generally only sell to their local clients.

Thanks.
