This weekend I went to put the top down on my 06 Xlr and it won't go. the windows go down, the trunk opens but the top won't engage to lower itself. I've tried it several times and get the same response. I double checked to insure the barrier is up correctly in the trunk and there's nothing in the part where the top is suppost to go. It's sunday, it never would happen on a day when the dealer's available. Guess I'll be seeing the dealer Monday monrning. Have any forum members experienced this and if so, what was done to fix the problem. Bill:confused

Dear Bill Confused:

Yes this has happened to me and my 2005 XLR is currently in the shop today for the same reason. There are several bulletins on this issued by General Motors entitled "intermittent top failure" (I'm paraphrasing so don't hold me to the exact title). My dealer had to order a sensor that sits on top of the windshield that helps the top and the computer go through this complex procedure.

The funny thing is that this intermittent behavior did not start until the dealership installed the last 'software update' approximately 4 weeks ago. The car has been in the shop four times since then to resolve this issue and it was the last visit -- last week -- when they discovered these new technical bulletins from GM and the strong possibility that a sensor is at fault.

I just picked up my 2005 XLR and with great disappointment found out that today's visit to the shop was unproductive as the top is still showing signs of intermittent behavior. I had the customer service representative from the dealership sit in the car to see first hand the top not able to go down (but on the fourth try it did) and then when it was down I could not put it up.

For those who have access to General Motors service bulletins, the bulletin number that this dealership was using to try to fix this intermittent behavior is #1790497. I do not have a copy of that so I do not know what it says and probably wouldn't understand it anyway.

The dealership seems to be at a loss now for this erratic behavior and can only promise me that they would be on the phone tomorrow morning with GM Tech to see if there are any other ideas.

top won't go down

I picked my 06 xlr up this afternoon. They replaced 2 sensors according to the paperwork. Hope that takes care of the problem of the top not going down. It's really a shame to have problems with a car this expensive. Hopefully I won't have anymore problems. I can only hope. I almost traded it for a new V today, but then I thought, and GM should take note, why would I put more money into a car that is already overpriced? Performance wise, I can go back to a corvette for less money and more performance. I think I'll mull this prospect over for a few months, might even go to another brand if I have more trouble with the xlr. Bill:cool
