We have had our '05 in several times over the past few months with top/trunk problems. The pattern seemed pretty reliable; back the car out of the garage to wash it, when putting it back in the garage afterward, we get a "Top Not Secure" message. The top will fail half-way through if you try to operate it in that condition. By the next day, it would usually be fine.

The latest event left the trunk entirely inoperable.

After 3 or 4 trips in, they tell me they found a tiny drain that had been blocked, and the trunk mechanism was getting wet... standing in water.

Just posting an experience that you may want to pass along if you are having similar problems.

I`ve had the TOP NOT SECURE once, after lowering my top on a short trip this message came on. When I restarted my car the message was gone. Till today, I never had any problems with the operating of my top.

Same here on the message plus not having used the top recently. In my case it had more to do with the trunk than the top... trunk movement being necessary to operate the top. Mention the drain problem and water around the trunk pump/mech.

Top Not Secure

I had this, too, and my dealer told me they had a note on it from GM. He bent the contact in the windshield header so it made solid contact with the roof and the problem's gone. When you've got Top not Secure in the DIC I think it might effect how the trunk and top systems function/don't function.

yes i have had my xlr in for about 14 repairs and had cadillac enginier out to inspect and repaired after picking up car after 1 week in shop on my way home roof froze and sent in for 4 more repairs after being garrented 100% repaired I have hired an attorney since then I have found out this is an on going problem and xlrs have been bought back if you like your xlr have them replace I was offerd a replacement but iI chose no mor head aches.

I guess I've had every message that DIC can produce, but, Knock on wood, I've never had trouble with the top or any message saying, "top not secure". I put my top up and down as much as I switch channels on the TV, the only message concerning the top was the divider not secure. so I guess I'm lucky.

OK. For anyone who is interested (GM lurkers maybe?)...

I've been puzzled as to why I can so reliably get the error message when I wash the car... versus just hitting a rain-storm or something.

I washed the car last night and did notice something that might be a clue. One of the things I do first is the wheels... brush the tires and wheels with soapy water and RINSE THE WHEEL WELLS OUT WELL.

One of those little details that makes a car look nice even if you don't consciensly notice it... clean wheel wells look nice.

I suspect there is a path from one of the rear wheel wells to some unprotected wireing.

I'm not in a mood to pull the wheel and start looking right now, but somebody might take an interest and see if something should be sealed up a little better there.

hmmmm, interesting. We've had leaks in the roof when going thru the pressure washer, and now the trunk lid won't close after the roof stows into the trunk. Trunk lid works fine anyother time.. Where is that drain you say they unblocked?

3 of us have had the trunk lid raise WITHOUT our intervention while backing out of our garages. We did NOT activate the fob or dash button and the trunks were secure when we entered our cars. No audible signal or other indication of the trunk lid raising were noticed by any of us. In each case, independently the same dealer stated "this is the first we ever heard of this problem". We believe there is a malfunction with the fob or with the trunk lid mechanism. In each case this happened while in reverse, backing out of a garage resulting in nearly $6000 damage to the lid and its mechanism. We have no interest in hearing that it must have been something we did to cause this problem. You folks have had trunk lid problems that may have a relationship to our experience though different. Kindly respond if you know of and can possibly document a similar problem. Thanks.

This sounds like a similiar problem with the windows. They get out of sink and you have to reprogram it. Most of the items on this car are an easy fix for the dealer and the XLR mechanic because they know how to correct it.
My window would go all the way up and then reverse to the bottom and then settle at about 1/4 of the way up. FiX.............open the door, power on, hold the button till it gets to the top and count to 5, reverse it to the bottom and count to 5 and it's fixed. I know this isn't the same but it's along this idea.
