There have been threads on tire wear which I have contributed to. My question is what is the tire warrenty on our factory tires and why can't we receive credit with premature wear? I know I can't because I bought the car used.
We were rather intrigued with the question of mileage warranty and sent an email to Michelin Consumer Relations:
"Our recently purchased 2005 Cadillac XLR is equipped with Michelin Pilot HX
MXM4 Radial XSE ZP tires. What is the warranted mileage for this tire?"
Their response was:
"The Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 is a luxury performance touring tire. This tire
is built for great handling capabilities while still maintaining excellent
all-season traction. Although the tire is not built for high mileage and
does not carry a manufacturer's mileage warranty, expected mileage from this
tire is 30-40,000 miles.
The Michelin Limited Warranty covers defects in workmanship and material for
the life of the tread or 6 years from the date of purchase, whichever occurs
first."
Unrelated to the matter of warranty, how many of you have actually studied the tire up close? It is utterly amazing the amount of "writing" including fine print messages on it.
Below is a repost from an earlier thread, I cant say this enough! Please get out your blue & white Michelin ZP tire warranty (small booklet), read it & learn it. Then if your dealer has any questions, have him read it as well.
I knew it would eventually happen, A client was driving to my office in a Thunder Gray roadster when he decided to play chicken with a huge pothole. He lost big time, on his DIC is said LR tire flat 55 mph maximum. He was concerned since he was on the highway, people were poining to the tire as he continued to drive the 45 miles to my office.
He called me a little worried, I told him to just drive normally and not to make any erratic lane changes. When he arrived I was shocked to see a 4" plus gash in the sidewall and the wheel was not resting on the ground.
I have told every client about the benefits of the ZP (Zero Pressure) tires and how the sidewall being 4 times thicker to support the weight, thus giving you the ability to drive 55mph for 125 miles. Besides the ability to be able continue driving, it was under warranty.
For those of you that your XLR sales executive didnt show you the Michelin tire warranty booklet inside your XLR portfolio you need to get it out. The XLR's tires is covered by a road hazard warranty, if your tire becomes unserviceable during the first two years of service or before 50% of the tread is worn whichever comes first, Michelin will replace the tire FREE OF CHARGE.
WHEEL CENTER CAPS -- I forgot to mention that one of the small items you MAY want to know IF you ever have to deal with haiving new tires put on the car is how the center hubs are removed and replaced.
On the surface it seems to be simple BUT a taped screw driver is best to prevent scratching the wheel and finish. Also the cap has a slot that aligns 180 degrees from the tire air valve. If the cap is replaced in any other position it will not seat properly and it will more than likely come off.
Thanks for the info on the proper position of the Tire center cap . Where did you find this information? Is it in the owers manual? After cleaning and waxing my wheels I noticed one cap did not seat right after I put them back on, now I know why. Tim
Allan:
There seems to be a LARGE "disconnect" regarding the "useful life of these tires. As you no doubt have noted MOST owners here are getting 15 -20k on a set of tires.
However as Ed and Sandra noted: "The Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 is a luxury performance touring tire. This tire
is built for great handling capabilities while still maintaining excellent
all-season traction. Although the tire is not built for high mileage and
does not carry a manufacturer's mileage warranty, expected mileage from this
tire is 30-40,000 miles.
The Michelin Limited Warranty covers defects in workmanship and material for
the life of the tread or 6 years from the date of purchase, whichever occurs
first."
Now I am not trying to put you on the preverbial "spot" but a 15k to 20k difference is in my assessment significant!!
