Sill Plates

Today I tackled new sill plates. The ones on the 04 seemed ratty on the edges. I tried a ton of stuff to fix them but nothing seemed to work so I ordered new one ones. They were about $50ea from Cadillac. and they took a 3 weeks to get. I was not sure how they were on and the XLR 4,000page shop manual says nothing on them, figures right! So I taped the edges where id be working and used a very thin putty knife with worn edges and a dull thin blade. I worked it up under the edge and then pushed hard like i was scraping ice off a windshield just slower. when I was able to grab an edge I then pulled it out like pulling duct tape off of something but you did not want the tape to break!
When it came off it sort of stays rolled up and you cant use it over again. There may be a better way like a heat gun on low to break the glue bond, but I was installing 2 brand new ones so I really did not care. I cleaned off the old glue with laquer thinner carfully so as not to get it on any painted surfaces. The new ones have a pull off plastic strip. you peel it off then set the edge of the sill plate in the space carefully because if it touches the surface too fast its there like the ones you removed. They set in place in seconds.
I saved the old one's and straightend them out so I can glue them on a board or wall for display. The new ones are perfect! jim

I replaced my sill plates also (on my 04). Rather than take the old ones off, I put them over the existing ones. I know, it was a cheesy method to do the job, but not only did it cover the old ones perfectly, but it actually made the sill plates even with the old scuff plates they reside in! The sill plate is perfectly flush!

The only issue I had was that the new sill plates weren't packaged very well; one of them received a small bend in it. It wasn't bad enough to return it.

homegameroom, I see you'll be at BG so I look forward to seeing the appearance of the sill plate. I know I'll have to do this some day................
The sill plate is the metal plate in the door opening that says XLR and on some this is where they put the build number.

Sill Plate Numbering

The "some do" relates to Limited Editions like the Neiman Marcus built that have the series number of the build (i.e. 24/250) on the sill plate.
