Hello, I'm looking at several used XLR's and have recently heard
many horror stories of electrical and retractable top issues. Any
input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

WELCOME TO THE XLR FORUM!!!

To answer your question about top issues there have been some software issues that have been resolved over time for all of the models. Basically there is a solonoid and switch system that monitors the various "top up" and "top down" processes. The newer models 2004 and 2005 needed newer switches and the "top software" enhancements which made them work like the newer models.

All of this is covered under the factory warranty as are other issues.

So my message for you to consider is buy your car from a Cadillac dealer and be sure it is "Cadillac Certified" or has another Cadillac Warranty with it. That way your 2004 will be covered just like a 2009 and all of the enhancements will have been addressed under the certification process.

I have a 2004 and it is covered under the Certified Warranty until December 2009. It has no issues and works as well as a new one. The important thing to convey is that I would buy my car again if it were covered under the same warranty.

Please look in the Technical section under "Tops" and in all of the other sections there. They will bring you up to speed on all of the issues and concerns.

Besides looking unique and performing well, these cars are terriffic values in my assessment.

Good hunting.

Hi Bret,

We have an 04 we purchased used in 06 with a Certified warranty til 1011 or 100K! Had ECM issues, all fixed under warranty....Any time there was an issue, our Cadillac Dealer fixed it, treated us real well. Yes the 04-06 models do have some ironing out, but all in all, it is a great car. If you buy an 07-08...you might have less issues...
Good luck!

I'm not sure that the XLR is any less reliable than any other car of similar technology and complexity (check the SL-class, for example). It only takes a few internet posts (true or otherwise) to blemish a product's reputation, and reputations are not necessarily reality.

Drive as many as you can, they all feel different. Generally, the most recent model will have more updates, but that doesn't mean that every newer car is better than every one built before it. The build quality varies, and the parts are never identical. Nor do all owners treat their cars identically.

For any car like this a GM warranty is very helpful, and if it's still active, the initial warranty can often be extended (for non-CPO cars).

Good luck.

As you're well aware, the XLR is a great car! But it's complex, and as you increase complexity, your odds of malfunctions can follow accordingly. Reading through these posts might give you pause, but remember, the vast majority of the cars are relatively trouble-free, so they're out driving instead of posting problems.

All of the advice from the XLR owners here is excellent, and the best I can add is: Educate yourself and learn as much as you can about the car.

Download a pdf version of the owner's manual and make a little checklist of each option/function. Sit in the car and ensure the proper operation of each switch, light and indicator so you know exactly what kind of shape it's in before you drive the car.

Have someone sit in the car and with the engine running, cycle the top however many times as necessary for you to observe it from different sides/angles. Look for evidence of wear marks and binding on the linkages, and chaffing of any hydraulic lines or wire harnesses around pinch points.

With a good checkout, follow-on warranty and decent dealership nearby, you'll derive a great deal of driving pleasure from this car!

Enjoy the hunt and send us baby pics!

CC :cheers

A couple of footnotes:

Although the '04-'08 cars look alike, and it seems like only the colors vary, things changed from year to year. During that time, the transmission changed, the tires changed, the suspension was updated, the external antenna disappeared, and the lighting changed, for example.

There were other detail changes, as well, and some of them might make a difference in which car you decide to pursue. There are a few sites that have that kind of information, but linking them would probably be frowned upon.

IIRC, both the transmission and the tires changed in '07, and the suspension was updated in '08. Both of those make a significant difference in the platform.

Car reports may be useful, but don't take them literally. Title changes from state to state may indicate an attempt to obscure problems- or they may just indicate the car being auctioned or wholesaled to someone that thinks they can sell it at a profit. In some areas of the country, the cars bounce around a bit.

As with any car, new or used, if you're familiar with cars, take your time and do it yourself. If not, find somebody really good to help you, and make sure you can inspect the car on a rack, too. Take all the time you need, and ask questions.

new car

Everyone here is giving you good sound advice. Here's one they all skiped. Get the vin # and ck on line or with any GM dealer you may know and look at the repairs and or call back sheets. If the car went back to get all the little demons fixed then viola' the bad stuff was already taken car of. My 04 was a gm buy back due to way to many repairs. That scares most but not me as a car guy I read the 4 page list and saw all the demons where repaired and the gm dealer I bought the car from (Not cadillac) gave me a 4 yr top of the line warranty to boot. My factory warranty ran out this past April and now all I have is that warranty. The secret is to DRIVE the car and use everything often. Never let the car sit more than 2-3 weeks. Never start it for 10 min. then put it away. Always drive it at speed at least 10 mi. turning everthing on and off, including the top up and down. Electrics like to be used and operate a lot better that way. Including the hydrolics and micro switches! Good luck. jim

FOB pocket is located inside on the left (drivers) side of the glove box. Did the door button function intermittently before not working at all? You might want to get an estimate from a shop nearby be fore checking with a dealer.

You might want to get a quote from another shop beside the dealer. Mechanics at the dealers with XLR knowledge are limited. They rely on Vette knowledge. Repair shops are in the same boat, but they are usually less expensive.
