Hello everybody, I have been reading these posts for some many month's now. I live in Houston Texas and am picking up my new XLR tomorrow.
I have some concerns with the MANY challenges with this vehicle. :confused Can any owners offer me some reassurance that this $80,000 purchase won't be a regret as I am dreading all of these problems coming down the road with this vehicle.
Thanks to all who respond

I would say that if you went on any forum for any car you will find good and bad, small things and big things that can make you start talking to yourself, but in all fairness, I think you have chosen well and even if you have a few things that make you wonder why you bought this car, the good will over power the bad.
NO, I don't work for GM, but I did buy an 04 and have just purchased and 06 XLR-V and I can't get the smile off my face.
Bob..............Enjoy!

Hi pyramid, it`s just like Bob (standby) says, a lemon you can get off each car maker and if you have your XLR for three months with, I would say 3000 miles on the clock and not a single problem - than you will have an excellent automobile.

I have been on several vehicle sites and for several makes. If you just read those site you would think they were all problematic. Typically people write about there concerns more than writing in a day by day report that everything is running 100%. I have 14,300 miles on my XLR and for the first time ever got the 100,000 mile 6 year GM warrenty. I never wanted to own an XLR out of warrenty. I did this a month after having the car and got a great price of $750. I have not had problems with my car but do sleep well at night. You made a good choice and you will enjoy the XLR. Good Luck.:seeya

Hope you don't mind us asking, but how / where were you able to obtain the extended GM warranty for that price? We made inquiries at two dealerships and have been quoted a cost for our '05 that is over 3x what you paid.

Long story but the Readers Digest version is: Looked at the car on the showroom floor sales person greeted us. The sales person said the car was a certified used car- had 10K on the ODO. I didn't say much more and left. Returned 10 days later, was in again for service on my car and went to the showroom. I was greeted by a different salesman who I put together a deal with. Above the XLR was a hanging sign saying certified used car. A month after the purchase I learned they did not sell it to me as certified. I then explained the situation to the owner and the agreed solution was to offer it to me for $750.

Upstate,

Thanks for the answer.

We purchased our XLR new at the end of July '05 and now have about 2,600 miles on it. Does anyone have suggestions about how we could obtain an extended GM warranty for much less than what we're currently being quoted which is in the $2,500 range?

Extended warranties have huge markups and all the dealer has to do is fill out one form. The $750 price Upstate got was probably below dealer cost as a good will gesture by his dealership. I would think waiving $1,300 under their nose might get their attention. I generally wait until the standard warranty is just about up before I would buy an extended as I am notorious for trading cars I plan to keep forever at about the 2 year mark. Motorcycles I keep a bit longer plus most of those only come with a 1 year warranty. I'll try ot remember to check on what we are selling non OEM warranties for this week and report that cost back to you. I would suggest the OEM warranty on this car though or any car that has potential for electrical issues.

Pyramid, I agree with the other comments, any auto owners forum you go to is going to dwell on the things that go wrong. If your dealership has a good service department and has sold and serviced a number of XLR's already you should be in good shape even if a thing or two need adjustment. Mine hasn't needed anything other than the free oil change yet but one of my decision points in buying such a complex vehicle was I have full trust in the service department.

Conventional wisdom is usually that extended warranties of any kind are not cost effective (whether cars, stereos or washing machines).

Put that same amount of money in a bank account or mutual fund and you will work out better.

Out of warranty?

Pyramid, no one almost ever writes anything good--we come here to complain and get our problems solved:yesnod--at least you are prepared for the aggravation--I found the site when my dealer couldn't do the 1st fix, and I was searching for the answer (which, btw, I found here and printed out, and then got my rotors changed which stopped the squealing).

I decided before I got my 04' to lease it for 48 months (I do 7-8,000 mi/yr) mainly because its such a technologically complex toy--I was scared to ever own it out of warranty!

This automobile is so complicated that the service people have absolutely no idea how to fix almost anything.

2 reasons: 1) its too complicated, compared to "normal" cars and

2) most dealers have sold maybe 5 or 10 XLR's if they are an XLR powerhouse, so its not like they get any real experience with XLR-specific problems, until YOU show up with yours!

I have a love-hate relationship with my XLR--LOVE :angel almost every single thing about the machine. HATE :reddevil having to go to service 3 times for EVERY SINGLE FIX (I'm on my second dealership with the exact same experience!).

Oh well, I guess its a ying & yang thing--for every pleasure, there is a price--I'd say the good outweighs the bad, about 60/40 in my case.

I can't think of what other car I'd rather drive though!:thumbs Thanks to the XLR, I'm hooked on convertibles now, and I love the exclusivity, the toys, etc., etc. its impossible to be uncool in an XLR, with shades on and top down:cool

If you want to buy American, you don't have too many options!:nodno

I'm already worrying about what to do when the lease runs out in Feb of 08'!

Bob - did you give any thought to buying a C6? Fewer problems; Similar type of car.

thought?

After two years of ownership, I wouldn't trade the XLR. Yes, there have been a few problems but nothing serious.

I'm hoping for a few more top-down days in the Houston area before the Summer hits.

You should live in Southern California where I have my top down every day at one time or another------------and never put in down or up without an audience.
