Performance mode

06-V ONLY I have no idea how many of you V owners have found out about this, but the word "performance" is not used in connection with the staabilitrak or Traction Control in the owners manual.

What I found out, just by accident.
Tap the TC button on the console. For each time you tap it you will get the following, not necessarily in this order. This doesn't work on the 04. You guys with the 05's and 06's will have to try the tap method on your own and report.

Performance mode (with this setting, move the shifter to the left into the gate, but do not use the + and -. You have one hot Tamale in this setting.)
This is how I have been driving my V and this is why I really think this car is hotter than most company's that have had it on a track. Check it out and let me know.
Stabilitrak off
Stabilitrak ON
TC Off
TC ON
As most of you already know, you can still hold the button down for 5 seconds and TC/Stabilitrak is off, but this performance mode is a lot better.

Mike, 12 mpg means faster than average and I believe you`re a ticket collector.

I think in C&D they`ve had an observed fuel economy ao 15 mpg.

When does your speed-limiter kicks in? at 155? I hope I get the chance to check this out on Bob`s V soon.:cheers

Hans
limited at 155 just like the XLR....but I can get there alot sooner!!

..............you'll need to show bob what it feels like

if I get the green light of him, I´ll show him:thumbs

I hope the export V is not governed and if it isn`t I expect I can hit the 300 kph very easy and as you say much faster than the 292 in my XLR.

One wild hair

You pay all tickets my friend.
Well Hans, I found out just what the performance mode means, since it's not described in the manual anywhere. I took a corner at about 30 and kicked it hard and found myself all over the road, sashaying up the street until I could get it under control, looked in the mirror, no cops, and hit again so know one would catch up at look at the stupid driver in the XLR-V. Thank God no one was in the other lanes on either side of the yellow line cause I used all of it. It definitely takes the TC and stabilitrak off and leaves you with a wild hair. From now on I will only use the performance mode if I'm going straight.

My understanding was that performance mode just loosens up the TC and Stability - it doesn't full disable it.

If you want it fully disabled you have to hold the TC button down for 8 secs and it will say that both TC/Stab disabled on the DIC.

Based on the fact that you got it straightened out, and didn't spin out - sounds like stability trac was still on. :)

DR,
I'd like to agree with you on this, but I did the driving of my life to get this car back under control, it was really out of shape. I had it sideways to the curb twice before down shifted and the minute I had it aimed straight, I punched it to get it out of this mess I was in. I don't think this vehicle had anything on, no TC, or stabilitrak.
If I was totally honest, I would say my reaction time is not what it used to be, and I must realize that I should play in a straight line, and slow down.

Bob, we get no tickets:nono
I`ve had the chance to drive my car at a GM Performance Training with TC and stability track on and off and I know the differences very well. On dry roads it`s very much fun but not on wet roads. I know, I wont turn it off then.

Now, don`t forget you have a monster-motor in your V with almost 450 horses compared to the about 350 horses of mine.

Too bad nobody was there with a movie-camera when you used both sides of the road, I would pay 100 bucks to watch this clip.

Even in the "V's" performance mode (or Corvette's competitive driving mode) you can lose it quickly due to the momentum they generate as the power comes on. The "yaw" control capability is limited once you get past a certain point, it's really designed to keep you from losing it in a curve or a corner, not when you pedal-to-the-metal from a slow speed corner. I have also experienced the "Bob Shuffle" and it can happen so quickly there is really no way to stop it other than to cut power and turn into the spin until traction is gained.

In fact, I don't think the problem lies as much with the "performance mode" as I think it's due to the tremendous amount of torque/power available to the car when they sense you want it. As you know, the ECU's "think" and "remember" your driving habits. If you drive aggressively, they will remember and respond in kind.

The more of those incidents logged into the close loop operation the better the car responds over time. If you really want to maintain your car's aggressive profile, never let the dealers "reflash" your ECU or provide their "updated programming," Every time they do that, you lose all of that precious information your car has logged over time.

Since the "V" is a forced induction motor, ECU memory becomes even more important in squeezing out every ounce of available power. One extra pound of boost could be worth an extra 50 horses at the rear wheels, so if the OEM programming limits boost to 8 lbs and they find that is causing an increase in repair costs, they will simply alter the programming to retard timing, increase the threshhold for wastegate operation, etc. all to limit the power output and lower repair costs.

SVT owners have known this for years, they realized over time and by chatting in forums such as this that there was a correlation between dealer visits and a slight loss of power and throttle response. Didn't take long to see that the ECU flashes were being done as a routine part of their visit, the new program was designed to "de-tune" the forced induction motors in an attempt to lower repair costs.

They also discovered that Ford was voiding power train warranties for simple items such as CAI installs, pulley swaps, computer chips or after-market programming upgrades, etc.

Sorry for rambling..................but I'm pretty certain the guys at Diablosport will soon be working on a hand-held programmer for the XLR-V. Once you have that, you will have the best of both worlds. The ability to download a performance tune to the "V's" ECU and the added capability of uploading and storing your current settings. That way you can switch back and forth.

Funny thing you should ask for a clip, send $100 bucks to Standby's slush fund to learn how to drive. I suggest everyone do this and I will send a cotton T-shirt of the event, guaranteed not to shrink

I do appreciate the ramblings. I need a smart pill for me now. I'm not afraid of my V in a straight line, but that brought a reality back to me that I don't have the reflexes to drive like that. I most of all, don't want to take out some poor soul that can't get out of the way.

Standby and Hans:

XLR-V Field Trip

You'll LOVE THIS!!! I had my 04 XLR over at the dealer and while they were doing some key fob upgrades (see separate posting) The dealership owner and the new car sales manger and the XLR salesman hunted me up. they wnated to know if I would like to drive one of their new XLR-V's while my car was geting fixed.

So after some prodding I did with no one with me. It does get up ad go!!! Thans to Standby's posing about the performance mode I was ready to try it when the orads were clear. The rear end squatted and the front end lifted when I floored it in 1st and then moved the gear shift to 2nd, 3rd and so on. It was at 100 before you knew it. that was enough for daytime and public roads.

The guys are eager to get me out of my 04 and inot one of the V's but when I mentioned the "reduced prices" that we were discussing on the forum they go real pale. So they are huddled to see what the "besst deal" would be which is not my idea it's theirs.

I would be hard pressed to do the deal but we'll see Nice car though.

Regards

Have you considered taking some performance driving classes? I bet just a couple of hours on a closed course and instructor will get everything straightened up for you.
G
I wish I had more time, but I'm so busy that I just think I will take a little more care in the way I drive.
Thanks for the idea.
G
Hans,
I can't wait to get you in my V at the airport

Hi XLR I FL, you are so right, I love this and your dealership is like it should be.

I know, it took you about 10 sec. to get from 0-100 and that`s a lot of Vrrroooommm. 13 more days and I´ll get my first ride in a XLR V (Bob`s) and best of all, not only for 50 miles or so, no, we will maybe put about 2000 miles on it-LA -Vegas-ABQ and back plus some driving while the XLR-Rondezvous.:thumbs

BTW my dealership is about the same as yours, they gave me all the interesting cars for me for a drive - and I love this too.

Maybe I get to see you when I´m in aug. in Cape Coral - Jacksonville isn`t that far.

13 days from now!!!! Today is holiday in Germany (Fathers-Day) and I got from my wife a very small camera which can make video-clips too especially for our big XLR-Meeting in ABQ.

Hey, first time I get dropped of at the Airport by an XLR (mine, my daughter drives it back) and get picked up from an "V" (yours) at LAX and the same when I get back home.

Isn`t that great.

Hans:party

Hans:

you are about 4 1/2 hours south of me on I-95. It's a real haul since it isn't the Autobaun and the State Troopers are mean!!

But we'll see what your palns are when you get into Florida at least

AREN'T YOU GLAD STANDBY IS LEARNING WHAT NOT TO DO IN THE "V" BEFORE YOU GET HERE??

G
Hey, I don't mind taking it on the chin............I learned a lot about my V in the last 3 months. I wasn't fortunate enough to have had a real sports car before this. Live and learn and LIVE some more.

lol...yes, I´m.
In the late 90s, that time I`ve had the big Fleetwood Brougham with the Vette engine I made it from Cape Coral/FL start 6.30 am to Bowling Green/KY arrived there at 4 pm. The trip was a little over 900 miles and NO troopers.
From the Hotel in B.G. I´ve called my friends in Cape Coral and they almost didn`t believe me that I was already there.:lol

Hans

Hans:

Well I will tell you that if you aren't doing at least 90 on I-95 and on I-75 you will be RUN OVER unless you are in the slow lane.

Regards
