Nice Story From a GM dealer

Once pone a time I toke my XLR to agency cause of a normal check up and the 10,000 Km service, told the guy's at the dealer that my car is leaking water and air, so they try to solve it in many way's like driving it fast ?? Then refuels it then driving it fast again but they told its NORMAL?!? Ok They are the GM dealer, then when I toke it for test-drive with the Forman of the workshop ((Engine Knocking accrued while Accelerating )) Very clear knocking so I've turned to the guy told him do you hear the knocking he said yes ??? then I told him so why we are hearing a knocking sound from the engine he laughed and told me (( IT'S NORMAL )) asked him why it's normal he said that all north-star are doing it ??

Definitions of Engine knocking on the Web:

• Knocking (also called pinking or pinging)—technically detonation— in internal combustion engines occurs when fuel in the cylinder is ignited by the firing of the spark plug but burns too quickly, combusting completely before the optimum moment during the compression phase of the four-stroke cycle. The resulting shockwave collides with the rising piston, creating a characteristic metallic "pinging" sound.

Octane knock

I'll bet your problem has nothing to do with GM. It's probably the fuel you are using. Knocking is usually caused by "pre-ignition" of the fuel due to compression of the fuel/air mixture. Related to this problem is "dieseling", or continued firing of the cylinders after the ignition is turned off. Here's a link:

http://www.shell.ca/code/motoring/tips/gasoline.html

These problems are usually remedied by use of higher octane fuel. What is the octane rating of the fuel you have been using? You should be using the highest that is available.

To quickly check if this is the case, you can buy an "octane booster" additive at the local auto parts store.

Where are you located?

BTW - I have had no problem with knocking, and my XLR exists on a diet of 91 octane fuel or higher.

They fueled it and now it's knocking? Time to have a visit with the dealership General Manager. He won't be happy at all if they have to swap out one of those Northstar (knocking optional) engines!

He went in for a water/air problem, maybe they filled it with water & air.

Now that was stupid if I do say so myself
These work very well when left in showrooms, just kidding, I'm not, I reapeat, I'm not a terrorist I'm a pirate.

In United Arab Emirates the only fuel grade we do have is 98 octane so I don't think 98 octane will do any knocking.

XLR is very nice car the problem is not GM my problem is with my dealer who's missing my car up.

98 Octane?

Is 98 Octane possible without using tetraethyl lead? If your fuel contains tetraethyl, the residue will clog your catalytic converter, which could also cause engine noise. The reason I'm focusing on fuel is your description of "knocking" - which is normally a fuel related problem. When does this knocking occur? At idle? Under full power? Cruise?

What is your dealer doing to cause an engine knock?

knoking

80% of knocking is fuel but still if your engine overheats with advance timing knocking will occur cause of pregnant the fuel/air mixture will burn before the right timing.

They've done something called crank recalibration as they told me I don't know what that is but they seemed happy for achieving it.

The funny thing that e GM mechanic from GM Middle East told me that it's normal that the engine overheats to above 220F, cause of lake of ventilation from the front grill.

I am talking about a dealer who's selling a very nice car but cannot service them properly, or rowing them.

My car was pretty nice, each time I take to the dealer I get scratches all around they don’t give a dam about it.

This is a picture of a brand new XLR see how they treat it, by the way it was 120f out side?

Let me see if I have this straight.

You're having knocking in the engine - especially when engine water temp exceeds 220 DegF (212 @ 1 atmosphere is boiling). No problem with that.

(I also make a lot of noise when I get too hot :) I hope its a dry heat.)

And when engine temps get high, you are still having pre-ignition, despite running high octane fuel. Hmmmm...

And your dealer has installed something called "crankshaft recalibration" to help with that problem. I think I would find out how that works. I have never heard of that here in the states.

I still think your problem is an octane knock exacerbated by high ambient temps. Have they done something special to the air intake for additional filtration? If not, blinding the filter with sand may alter the fuel/air ratio, and if so, it could cause that pregnant pre-ignition.

And all those little scratches could be from that nasty sand storm! Do other dealers in Dubai (or Abu Dhabi?") leave cars outside when they are in for repair? I'm with you. I wouldn't like that either. Your dealer should be responsible for damage to the finish on your car while in his posession.

My advice is to speak to the General Manager of the dealership. Is the dealership locally owned?

On another subject - you guys need to pump some more oil! $60/bbl is gettting too high! I work in the oil industry and these prices are making ME nervous.

I do love Dubai. Beautiful modern city. Like Singapore with sand. However, I've never been to Abu Dhabi.

His english is better than my arabic. I respect anyone who takes the trouble to learn my language. :thumbs As you know, I travel a bit, and have lived abroad, and have leared that sometimes you have to be patient to communicate effectively.

I'm impressed that he found us, and feel honored that he sought our advice after running into problems in UAE.

Your 100% right Aviator. People that cannot write or speak our english may feel intimadated when people joke with them. Harry and I are always making fun of each other when I try to answer him in German and he in Enlish, we are firmiliar with each other, therefore, it's all in fun. Welcome Nslootah and I apoligize for my rudeness.

Oil Price

You could be right. But oil prices never stay up there very long. We've had a long spell of very cheap energy prices.

Even now, the US and Canada have the cheapest fuel in the industrialized world. Most places in Europe and Asia the price is roughly double. :eek

Gasoline is still cheaper than bottled water.
