Has anyone come up with a crack code for the Nav System that will permit its' use while underway? Found the code for the DVD through this forum and it works great. (I may never use it but I hate being told by GM when I can and cannot use something) :flag Wondering now about the Nav. Would like my wife (passenger) at least to be able to use it while we're underway

What are you looking for when driving? You can still zoom out or in. Ask it were there is food, gas, gambling etc.

The thing I would like it to do is show more cross roads when you zoom out over 1/2 mile. If you are in the city its OK but if you are driving the back roads it will drop YOUR road you are on if you go over 1/2 mile. Also if you are planing a trip it only pick major roads NEVER any others.

To tell you the truth I haven't got the hang of the hang of the voice request system yet. Guess I'll have to read up on it and practice

If the nav. system is on you can hit the switch on the left side of the steering wheel that shows a guy speaking and then say "I am hungry or restaurants" it will then display any restaurants that are near you. It will do the same thing if you say gas/fuel. There is a list of about 70 names/phrases I think that it knows. In your book there is a list and also a small card you can put in the arm rest to look at that has the list of names on it.
Try it you will like it...... :jester

Voice Recognition

Blaise you are right to tell Bill N about the voice commands, it really makes finding various places simple. Actually with the XLR's Navigation Guide it will give you 170 voice commands you can learn.

My experience with the voice commands (paraphrasing):

me: "Radio on"
car: "Gas 1/4 mile ahead"
me: "Radio on"
car: "Chinese restaurant up ahead"
by now, I'm laughing so hard I have to pull over... then I turn the radio on.

I have actually had good success with it and use it frequently,
but you have to be very specific with what words/phrases are recgonized.

Oh, and when she dosen't understand,
yelling at her and adding foul words
to the phrase dosen't seem to help either! :nono

Thanks for the list--having it in the office, made it easy to copy onto one page, and shring by 50% to a "quick reference card" which Cadillac should give you!

I had made a copy I keep in the side pocket for reference,
and to learn a new one now and then.

Motorboat mentioned a small card in our book,
but I haven't looked for it yet

I transferred the above list into an excel document, reduced the font and made my own card for the car

Thanks again :)

Navigation System Overide Code

There has been a lot of discussion about a code for the Nav System to input information while moving.

Let me say it simply, there is no code to activate the non highlighted buttons, the system does not work like the DVD viewing system.

The screen that is used for diagostic purposes and where many have input the code for the DVD viewing while in motion has no effect on the Nav System.

Let me also say that the ability of being able to view the DVD's while in motion is being corrected on future buid XLR's.

It's a shame that even when there is a passenger in the car, information cannot be entered into the NAV system. There is no good reason why a passenger should be locked out of the NAV system. As far as the DVD, well, that's another story, but it still seems the passenger should be able to take advantage of this.

It is really ridiculous that Cadillac -- and other manufacturers -- do not allow user input to the navigation system when the car is rolling. In my humble opinion, this is simply a case of the lawyers running the company.

Even a Seville STS (circa 2000) would allow a user input with the car in motion to select nearest points of interest. This was quite handy when you were in a large city looking for a parking garage, for example. The not so perfect voice recognition system will display nearest parking lots or garages but it will not allow you to select one and have the system direct you to it without parking the car and going through a route definition.

Come on Cadillac -- this is one you owe us!

Points of interest (POI) while moving

While moving you have 2 ways to continue use some of your nav systems features. In motion simply touch the screen while in map mode, your POI button will show up at the bottom of the screen. Depress the button and you are now in "Points of Interest" mode. The nav system is now operational to find places from restaurants to sports complexes.

2nd- While driving you can press the screen while in map mode, the screen will move in the direction of the press. You can continue scrolling on the map to get to your destination, once at the destination simply depress the marked button to store it in memory, the have the ability to go to that destination.

I have done this many times, as long as you know where you are going.

I came across the NAV pinout for the wiring harness in Cadillac Escalades and GM Hummers. The solution was placing a switch between the Vehicle Speed Signal (VSS) lead. When the circuit is broken, NAV input is allowed while driving. These vechiles also use DENSO NAV units.
