I just left my dealer and got a copy of my invoice. The dealer called Boiling Green and was told my car is bayed waiting shipping. Since this was a paid order it would be on priority. The last four digits of serial # 1830. Anyone happened to know exactly how to read the serial no. I remember a past post but can't seem to locate.

Serial Number Breakdown

Hi,
Please remember until your XLR is actually dispatched from the carrier and loaded, your XLR can be pulled from the bay area for quality control checks. Here is the posting of the Vin number I put up in October.

Sorry I had neglected to finish the rest,

I found an interesting variation between two NM XMR's VIN.

The entire VIN is the same except for the last 2 digits (of course) EXCEPT the 9th digit on one car is an 8 and the other is an X.

Any explanations? I verified that it isn't a typo.

Vin Breakdown

You are not wrong at all, the 9th position will change from car to car. Here is the Breakdown that is easier to under stand:

Position1-1= US Produced
2-G= GM
3-6= CADILLAC
4-Y= BODY= CHASSIS
5-V= MODEL= XLR
6-3= RESTRAINT Type FEDERAL REQUIRED
7-4= RESTRAINT Type FEDERAL REQUIRED
8-A= ENGINE CODE= 320 HP V8
9-5= CHECK DIGIT= VARIES on Every XLR
10-4= VEHICLE YEAR= 2004
11-5= PLANT-= BOWLING GREEN
12-17=600548 = Build Sequence

why then the disparity between the current serial numbers and the actual production figures?
My car is in the 601650 range, but it was produced in December when production figures were below 1000.
were there actually that many "test" vehicles?

I don't consider it a problem, since those cars never end up in anyone hands. It would consider it a problem if those cars were sold in that condition. I wouldn't be surprised if those eventually show up as demo units.

BTW, if you look at the Neiman Marcus edition VINs, that will give you a rough idea of how many pre-production models were made. I think the VINs for the NM editions are in the 500s (maybe someone can confirm that?). There were some black non-NM XLRs with earlier VINs, but that was only a few cars.
