Anyone know how to reset the "loose gas cap" check-engine alert? Dealer tells me its from filling up without shutting off the motor, at the gas station.

Hopefully there's a way without having to buy a car computer.

Reset

Have you tried hitting the "reset" button on the dash.

This works for some of the "messages" you get on the DIC (low fuel for example).

However, if the message is sent again, it will reappear (like the low fuel message).

I had the same problem with my 2003 BMW 745il. If you refill your car with the engine running, it destroy one of the computers. The light never went out until I had it replaced.

I had the same thing happen on my 2002 BMW 745Li. If you ever fill up with the engine running, then you have just broke something. It has happened twice with my beemer and I don't do it anymore.
Yesterday I had the light come on the XLR for a loose gas cap. I checked it and it was actually off.
I have never been more satisfied with an automobile more than the XLR. :thumbs

Dealer told me...

Dealer told me that the cause is fueling without shutting off engine, but I don't think I've ever done that.... :nodno

They re-set it in 2 minutes with a computer, but its good to know it would have gone away by itself eventually.

Oh, I did check the cap being tight, but it was.
