I, too, am getting the error message unless the fob is right in front of the wheel or right at the door for it to open. I've replaced the battery. I replaced the start button 3 years ago. Should I have the button replaced again?
Thanks for your help!

What does hiring a locksmith for your home got to do with XLR key fobs? This will turn into commercialization of this site and drive people away.
I worked on the home of a locksmith. At the time he was taking extra training for fixing new keyfob problems. I would guess many general locksmith's can fix keyless entry problems if they have had the training needed. Bob

There is a multitude of good Cadillac XLR how to videos on YouTube.com. Folding Top how tos, FOBs, etc etc etc etc. But check out these two how to videos. No need to make it complicated or expensive until you try these two XLR FOB videos and of course check out your owners manual:

If you have already replaced the battery in your key fob and are still having issues with the vehicle recognizing the key fob when it's not in close proximity to the wheel or door, it's possible that there may be an issue with the start button or the key fob itself.
While it's possible that the start button may need to be replaced again, it may be a good idea to have a certified mechanic or locksmith in N3 diagnose the issue before replacing any parts. They can perform a diagnostic test to determine whether the issue is with the start button or the key fob.
