I know there are other threads on this topic but - last night going to post office in the XLR - dash control read "Top Not Secure" - drove into parking lot and depressed switch to put top down thinking it would reset - it didn't, it got stuck!! Back to the dealer it went today with 310 miles on it. Oh well, guess I have the brake noise to look forward to as well (I still love the car but wanted to pile-on the topic anyway)

Your Tool

If you get the "Top Not Secure" message, it means that the hooks on the leadig edge of the top are not peroperly engaged in the grooves on the windshield.

You may be able to fix it yourself by the proper use of "Your Tool". (See Top Malfunction thread.)

Have you located it?

Aviator - went to the dealer last night to pick up car - the service paperwork basically indicated "no malfunctions with the operation" - the salesman and I walked out to the lot where the car was - people gathered around to see this curious car - I tried the top and IT GOT STUCK AGAIN!! Back into the service garage it went. I have a brand new 04 - the car was made in Feb 04 and when I got it had 25 miles on it - I was curious to learn what year your car is and when it was made - I referenced the micro chip issue to the dealer guys. I fear it might be back and forth like you experienced until they find the issue during an open/close operation. Have you heard 2005's experiencing the sticking issue? Its very frustrating to say the least.

For whatever it is worth, I know a lot of people (relative to the number of XLR owners) who have never had a top mechanism problem. Mine was manufactured just before Christmas 2003.

My guess is that it is an alignment issue that the dealers just don't know how to properly fix yet. I know that doesn't help you. However, one thing you can do is to make sure your dealer contacts Cadillac XLR tech support. That is the best way to get the issue truly logged.

Of course if it is an alignment issue the chances of it being properly fixed are going to vary by dealer until a service bulletin is issued.

I wonder if any 2005 XLR owners have had this problem yet (could be to early in the model year). Mine was made in Feb 2004. The dealer called this afternoon - they told me they have "no idea" whats wrong - no ETA at this point of when it will be fixed or when I will get my car back.

Dealer still does not know whats wrong with the top - will have to wait until Tuesday next week to call Caddy Tech - in the meanwhile they gave me a Crimson Pearl w/ebony interior to drive - it has about 1500 miles on it - my wife and daughters really like the color. I am still partial to the Platinum but the Crimson looks incredible as well - a real head turner indeed!

My car is a 2004, delivered in early May. You need to read through the "Top Malfunction" thread. http://www.xlrforum.com/showthread.php?t=518

I also had an intermittent fault. It was a microswitch on the windshield. Once replaced, I've never had a problem.
Good Luck!

Issues With Repairs- Techs Need To Call Support

Being an XLR dealer, I can strongly advise any XLR owner that suspects his/her dealer may not fully understand how to repair their particular issue, contact XLR Tech Assistance. The engineering support staff is dedicated to assisting dealers.

My XLR tech has worked on over 50 different XLR's and never has an issue with picking up the phone if necessary. Being a technician by trade I can tell you many tech's are not accustomed to calling for assistance if they figure they can trace down a correction.

If my Tech makes a call when necessary having worked on many XLR's, I would advise the XLR techs that work at a dealer that only delivers a few XLR's per year a must to stay in close touch with XLR Tech assistance.

We had one in that had the same concern. Tell them to check both header switches, these are at the top of the a-pillars for intermittent function. Also, there have been a few intermittent malfunctions of the luggage barrier switch.
