I was enjoying my drive home last night from the Adirondacks when I kept feeling hot air coming from somewhere. It was at night, I already had driven about 300 miles, and was about 78 outside. The source of the hot air (I'm single, so no spousal wisecracks here) was the passenger's side air vents! I had the pass side controls off, so I turned them on and set the temp at 72, but hot air persisted! I turned the vents off to make the trip bearable. After trying several different things (turning the HVAC on and off and MANY other combinations), the pass side still blew hot air. About an hour from home, it started working perfectly- nice cool air, but this AM it was blowing hot again! :banghead Yes, the driver's side air was working fine.

I don't relish the thought of driving to BG in my Acura with the XLR in the shop waiting for a part; has anyone else had this experience, and do you know if it could be a quick solution? Maybe a blocked or unplugged sensor or something?

Thanks in advance!

Duct

I would take it in, if you can before the trip. If they can fix it, that's a plus. But I wouldn't let that stand in the way of not driving it to BG.I know you know you can shut the ducts off on that side. Theres a small wheel to close it off. That would minimize the heat from coming from it.

Yeah, shutting theducts off did take care of most of it, but it's supposed to be HOT in BG!! (insert profusely sweating smiley icon here). Aw heck, I never have the AC on with the top down anyway- I'll just keep it down!

In the old days, the baffles were cable actuated (pull-push at the end of a cable). Now they are solenoid driven. The baffles direct and adjust the amount and type of air flow (hot/cold, internal/external, etc) and are electro-mechanical. Also, with it being "automatic" at times, the system will automatically change the fan speed and baffle settings to achieve the temp requested.

That all said, the condition you describe means that your passenger side air flow soleniod isn't functioning. It's stuck in the "hot" open position. That would either be an electrical or mechanical problem. The automatic function is doing overtime trying it's hardest to push more "cold" air into the passenger side area, but it doesn't know that the baffle is stuck to hot.

First guess - solenoid (component failure)
Second guess - mechanical jam (baffle)
Third guess - electrical signal to solenoid

Bottom line, it'll take the Service Tech to troubleshoot. Could be a one day effort if they find it and Fed-X in the parts.

I think I'd be a little more accurante in automotive terminology if I used "plenom" and "stepper motor" in place of "baffle" and "solenoid" respectively.

Good grief, it's been a month since I posted this, and it JUST got fixed! I was waiting for the dealer to get the other parts in that the car needed before I had this addressed.

The repair was quite simple (though it's not like I did it myself! :D ). The technician simply recalibrated the "doors" (thats what the service order stated anyway), and everything works fine!

I was skeptical of this repair since I have the factory service manual and I personally recalibrated them per the instructions in the manual. I guess I didn't follow the instructions to the letter...... oh well. All's well that ends well!!!!!!

PS Cadillac Tech NAILED it when I told him of the problem! No surprise there!:thumbs
