Gear Oil Leak

Has anyone had this problem. Gear oil leaking from the transaxel. Took the XLR to the Dealer this morning. And they agree That gear oil is leaking. But not sure where it is leaking From. They seem to think it is a seal between the Transmission and the Transaxel. Or a crack gear case. In any case I will be without my toy for few days. This is the third problem I have had with the XLR (3016 mile)

Stop by the dealer this afternoon to see what progress had been made on finding the Gear Oil leak. The good news is they found the "O" ring seal between the transmission and transaxel was at fault. The bad news was that a search for the "o" ring turned up with a No Stock. So it could be a week or more before I get the XLR back. My XLR will be 8 week old September 1 and will have spent 2 of those weeks in the dealer service bay. The 1998 STS that I traded in (125,000miles) spent 2 days at the dealer in the 6 years that I owned it.
"O" Ring Seal

The Dealer today said the "O" Ring Seal has been ordered. And it will be 4 to 6 wait for the "O" Ring to arrive. :banghead
"O" Ring

Called Cadillac help line this morning. And this afternoon I received a call from my dealer that the "O" Ring will be here Tuesday (Aug 31). And I should have the XLR back Wednesday.
Bummer

My first trip to the dealer at 2500 mi, was for 1) Brake squeal 2) XM only works 25% of the time 3) Nav computer locks me out 4) key fob intermittently didn't work and 5) wind noise.

They kept the car for 9 days, and told me that the fob should be in the right pants pocket to work, which it did.

Nothing else was fixed.

Next visit I demanded a rental Cadillac (promised at sale time).

All of a sudden, they were able to fix everything except the brake squeal and XM (doesn't work in the New York City area, no matter what or they refuse to replace the bad unit) in two days, with car available evening of the 2nd day.

I suggest you make them pay for wasting time, even if you don't need the rental.

The Deville was a pig, with a really mediocre stereo--I don't want or need it, but you need the "cash incentive" for the liar, I mean Dealer to "get some hustle".

This problem sounds very familiar to the problems the 97 to 04 C-5 Corvettes had with their leaky axles :banghead :cuss :puke

There have been a few people write about problems with there car here in this forum which is good but then they go over board about how bad there service is.

Well here we see that Cadillac is doings very thing it can to get this car great running again and trouble free. How many other car companys do you know would Fed-Ex a part and have it installed the same day? No matter how much you bitch at the dealer or call the main company. They would just tell sorry we are doing the best we can. Then you still have to wait 4 weeks. GM is doing a great job I think with this one of a kind car in its first year out.

Robin. I am sorry you have had problems with you car so soon after getting it. This is not normal. I have had mine since March 04 & I have about 5000 mile and not one problem.

I have nothing but good thing to say about the cadillac Dealer and there service dept. That is the reason that I bought the XLR from them. They were doing everything in there power to get my XLR back on the Road. And is was there Suggestion that I call the Cadillac help line. The Dealer is Crestview Cadillac in West Covina, California
Gear Oil Leak has return

Notice Gear oil on the Garage floor this morning. So it is back to the Dealer Tuesday. I am sure it will make there day. Other than the leak the CAR is running great. Have had one Top malfuction. It happen the day we pick the XLR up. The Dealer wanted to take a picture of my Wife and I standing next to the XLR with the Top down. Turn out to be a microswitch in the left hold down of the cargo divider.
No leak here - just a top malfunction at 400 miles - its been at the dealer since last Wed.
I got my XLR in April and have put about 1,500 miles on it. I open and close the top everytime I drive it (mostly nice sunny days). I have not had a single problem.

I also own an Esclade, Hummer, and have a new STS All-wheel drive on order. Mechanically, I have never had a problem with any of them. They all came from the same dealer so they tend to take care of me. That said, what irritates me is that it seems with Cadillac and the dealer that you have to raise a stink before they take you seriouse. It's like the try really hard to put out fires instead of preventing the fire in the first place.
The Dealer wasn't to happy to see my XLR with the same problem (3377 miles). They (The Dealer) interduced some dye in to the Transaxel gear oil. And drove the car around for a while. The Gear Oil Leak was there. But with out a trace of the Dye. So now they have ordered up a complete Transaxel gear case. Which will be here Monday. However two of the seals are out of stock. So far now I am a Deville driver. What a bore.

In talking to Cadillac today, They say that this problem is a First with the XLR
Talk to the Dealer this afternoon about when my XLR will return to the Road again. They said they have all the Parts. But no seals. And of course they are on back order. An they are not sure when they will get them. They are twisting the screws at Cadillac. And so am I. I Have let Cadillac's help line know what I think of there part Inv. for the XLR. Mean while it is driving the loaner DeVille.
Stop by the Dealer this afternoon. The Seals arrived this morning Via FED-EX. And the new Gear Case has been installed. They did a test drive this afternoon. However wanted to Drive it some more tomorrow to make sure there are no leaks this time around. So it looks very good that I will have the XLR back tomorrow
Got the XLR back Thursday afternoon. Drove it about 80 miles Friday and this morning (Saturday) I back the XLR out of the garage to find the Leak is still there. A puddle of gear right under the Transaxel housing on the floor. Call the Cadillac Help line and added this to my open file. So it is back the dealer Monday
gear oil leak

It might be the time to start making a stink about GM giving you a new car. In 2002 I bought a new BMW 745i. I had the car for 5 months. In that time it was back to the dealer 8 times for a problem with the Navigation system. My complaint was that I spent $75,000 for a vehicle and I should not have to be agrivated. Fearing bad publicity for their new flagship, BMW gave me a choice of a new 2003 745i or any other vehicle they made in exchange for my being quiet. I took an M3 convertible. There are many of us on this forum. Before I purchased my 2005 XLR I read many of your threads. I don't see why GM would not give you a new vehicle if you threatened to bash them on this forum. The XLR is the flagship of Cadillac if not the entire GM line. If you continue to write about your continuing problem with this gear oil leak people are going to think twice before purchasing a new one. This should also go for many of you with top malfunctions.
