I'm trying to decide the optimum time to purchase the GMPP Major Guard. Actually, I think my dealer doesn't completely understand the details, and the online dealers are of no help -- after many emails--"What can I do to get your business," etc., they don't respond as soon as it looks like I may not purchase a plan right now.

My car's date of first use was June 05, thus the factory warranty is good until June 09. Mileage is not a concern, the car now has 7,500 mi and I won't be driving it more than about 8,000 a year, tops. Since the clock starts ticking the date you purchase the extended warranty, it seems that waiting until almost the end of factory coverage is a good idea. I want the absolute longest policy possible, again, mileage won't be an issue.

Right now I can get 7 yrs, starting from today. One dealer told me that if I wait till 09 they will only allow me to purchase 4 yrs, max, but I can't verify this from the online quotes. Does anyone know if and when they start decreasing max length of coverage? What are the exact mileage and time points after date of first use?

Also, I understand that the price goes up the longer you wait, but I assume there are discreet points, in terms of mileage and months. My understanding is that I'm already in the second tier. At what point does the highest tier begin?

So far, the car is wonderful, no problems at all. I guess others may have the same questions, since none of us wants to pay for the almost inevitable roof or other high tech problems as the car starts aging.

Wow! Does the above make sense to anyone? (Mr. XLR???)

Thanks

My personal plan is to contact Mr. XLR (Allan) and get the extended warranty when mine nears the end (August 08) for my 04. He unserstands the car and the warranty programs better than anyone. I only want one to cover the top and its related hardware; many, if not most, of the GM warranties will NOT cover it.

I think there may be another thread here that discusses it....

Homegameroom,
Thank you here is the post.

I only recomend Cadillac Major Guard.

As long as you are under the original 4yr. or 50,000 miles, you are eligible for many types of policies. They vary on length of term and mileage, with various deductables. Contact your dealer BEFORE your original warranty expires.

For those that were concerned about the top mechanics, it is all covered under the Major Guard, do not take ANY other type of policy. If your dealer does not want to do the Major Guard, or if you feel they are out of line, simply contact me.

Warranty

Allen, what about us people that bought used certified? Is that Major Guard? Or is it better or what. I confused a bit with all these different plans and what I need to do to be protected against very costly repairs. I love this car but my love affair would turn into a bad divorce quickly if hit with expensive repairs regularly.

A certified Cadillac is a "New car warranty extended" that is only available prior to the delivery of the pre-driven vehicle. that automatically covers you to 6 years or 100,000 miles, from the original date of delivery which ever comes first. You receive all the benefits of the original new car owner, such as the nav disc updates for the 06/07 model years.

A major guard is Cadillac most comprehensive warranty and must be purchased prior to the end of your basic 4/50,000 warranty.

the free oil/filter changes are part of the "Preimum Care" package and not part of any warranties. I believe you need to pay $50.00 to extend that when you buy used. Allen will have the exact details.

That's very interesting ....... my dealership said that they would offer me "a deal" ... Prepurchase of 3 oil changes for 159.00 ......... this isn't right that we have different stories from all over and nothing to refer to ...... there's got to be some written "rules"............
OK I found it for you.......

The XLR Premium Care is for the {First) retail owner and is only availble to subsequent owners if the pay the 50.00 transfer fee within 30 days of transfer of ownership.

It does NOT go with the car for the life of the warranty, The transfer form must be filled out and be submitted to GM along with the fee for the transfer.

Here is the actual document you can print out...........

Thank you .... that helps somewhat. So, the Premium Care was not offered to us.... Just the Certified Warranty, and I have no recourse ..... and the Certified is NOT an extension of the Premium Care ........ do I have that right? Then what is the Certified an extension of?
right, it sounds as though you missed the opportunity for the premium care, which is basically oil/air/filter changes. The Certified is an extension of the actual manufacturers mechanical warranty.....and I hope you got it!

You have to remember that all dealers are in the business to make money. All of them will have different options for you to purchase. If you have questions, read your owners manual, and talk to the Service Manager (not service writer, they are on commission, they make money off of you). Also see if your dealer has a customer service rep, who will help you. You can also call GM's warranty admin. (number should be in you manual) to see what coverage you already have. Allen is right, make sure when you buy your extended service contract it is a GM Cadillac Major Guard. Many dealers sell "in house" or "after market" warranties. DO NOT BUY THESE!!!! THEY ARE CRAP!!! And call several dealers for pricing, I am getting ready to buy one for my Passion Diva, and I have prices with over a $700.00 difference for the same warranty.

RuthAnn,
Michael is correct, Certificatioon has nothing to do with oil changes on your XLR. "XLR Premium Care" is all maintence is covered during your warranty period. The main item is:
An oil change every 10,000 miles or 12 months. It can also be done if you change oil light comes on.

Many dealers don't understand this and that is way I posed the Premium Care information on my site:

I have sent you the Transfer form

Premium care

I didn't know anything about this program. I was chatting with Allen one day and in the conversation he said I needed to get the XLR Premium Care for my car. I said know one ever told a thing about it. But because Allen made me aware of it I now have this coverage on my car. I sent in all the paper work and complied with all rules in the time frame. They said they would send me some verification of it. Never heard back from them. So I called and they said they never received anything from me. So I checked my canceled checks and sure enough they had cashed their check. So I had to fax and etc.etc. They finally honored it. But it was a major pain in the a$$. I wonder if Allen knows if only certain dealers honor this.

I'm probably the 20th person to ask this, but is it too late to do the transfer? I bought mine from a wholesaler in FL earlier this year and did not get any info from the previous owner. Yeah, I know:eek , but the car is otherwise perfect and was a great deal! If it isn't to late, could someone (Allen) please send the forms to me also? :angel

I did try to call the phone # for the Premium Care program within my first 30 days, but I received no lovin' from the folks on the other end.

Thank you!

Ruth Ann,

PM me the form also, please. I haven't checked with my dealer, but I don"t remember them offering anything like this at purchase.

Thanks,

Cubby558:cool
Cubby, looks like everyone is taken care of in getting the form. I was one of the lucky ones since the previous owner of mine told me about it, I sent form to him for his signature, sent $50.00 check, blah.blah.blah and just like Galen, it's been cashed and haven't heard diddly. Cadillac Customer Service says it shows the Premium Care Contract has been transferred to my name, but I haven't needed to use it nor do I have any proof. Better check before I do need it since when I had DB put XM antenna on the car and I asked service guy about Premium Care, he said, "oh, you mean the Toyota Program?" He'd never heard of it but said he'd check into it. LOL
