i have a noise (a ping or knock) in the engine that i have been hearing since delivery of my brand new 06 xlr, now with 8,000 miles. usually heard from engine while going up hills, or when accelerating hard while using seat cooler/heater or air conditioning. it sounds like i'm using bad gasoline, but i'm not.

i have had two dealers give two different explainations...

1. gas in california has an ever-changing formula. even though i'm using the highest available octane and only quality brands like shell and chevron.

2. the engine needs time to adjust, causing the noise

what's your take on this? any adjustments i can recommend to the dealer? vehicle has been in four times for warranty service in two months due to multiple technical and cosmetic issues...

I would think the knock sensor would immediately adjust for any inferior gas ... Have they fully checked this component yet? Also, I would look at the exhaust too ... I once had a bad cat that gave me similar symptoms.

I'm truly suprised that this has been an on going issue for 8,000 miles without resolve. Sometimes you have to get a little tough in order to get things fixed.
Having been through the buy back program, I would drop the lemon or buy back card on them and see how they react.:banghead :banghead :banghead

Does the selling or repairing dealer really care? Does the Cadillac customer service manager really care? I have tried threatening lemon law, and it seems like they don't care. I kind of wish I bought a BMW or a Mercedes. Having the car that no one else has is awesome, but not when it's low quality and it's taking half my week to get stuff fixed.

I have a lemon, I know it. I have had the vehicle in four times for repair. The issues are all eventually fixed, it just takes multiple trips to the dealer to diagnose and properly fix the issues. I have about 10 or more issues overall, both cosmetic and technical... otherwise i wouldn't complain.

My recollection is that if they fix it or have a fix for it, you can't lemon it. You can always ask for a buy back based on a lot of problems, but that's up to your dealer or GM to comply.

Dealer cannot fix this problem. (Engine ping/knocking) They have finally identified it when I took them out for a road test, but said it does not need to fixed, it is normal. Here is what I am calling to recommend they check today, can you recommend anything else?

1. knock sensor
2. catalytic converter
3. exhaust system

Who, and what dealer is telling you that they cannot fix the problem? I'm on my second dealer and hope it's not the same dealer as you go to. Fix it or replace it, would be my answer to that dealer. Ba Humbug

What are you getting fixed?

I'm at Tustin Cadillac. Just came from their service dept. They had actually called the national engineer hotline and it seems like they may be making some progress. What it took to get this movement from their techs... is to talk to Cadillac National Customer Service at (800) 458-8006, then choose option 4. They'll call the dealer for you with some authority and find out what's really going on... since my service advisors don't really seem to know what's going on.

Bottom line is, if they tell you no, call National Customer Service. They are good about getting the ball rolling. Also talk to service managers, or the entire dealership general manager.

On my way out, I noticed a small 1/2 inch dent in the side of my passenger door. The paint was chipped all the way down to the bare body. Needless to say, I don't recommend them for anything at all. They say they'll repair it, and if it's just a touch up job, I'm keeping my rental car until they repaint the whole damn door.

The'll have to take the mirrow off, all badges and blend into the fender and back quarter panel or it will never match. Don't let them just paint the door.
Tustin is the new dealer I just moved to because I heard they where a lot better than most. As a matter of fact they called me to tell me they have a new motor mount come in to replace one of mine which is leaking. I told them after the first of the year and they said they would have a CTS ready for me when I pull in, which is more than Allen Cadillac would have.

I've had great service with Tustin, but I guess they can be just like the rest if they get stumped on a problem. Door dings a very hard to get with the composite, it must have really taken a hit. It probably will need to be blended into the fenders to look right...not a small job.

Engine rattle MAY have been fixed. I've only had time to drive about 10 miles.

Their solution was to flush the injectors with some type of cleaner. Haven't heard the noise since, I'll keep testing on my 300-mile road trip to Northern California coming up tomorrow.

Dent in passenger door is still there... need to take back after the holiday to get fixed. If you can recommend an excellent body shop in the Orange County area, I would like to have them pay for repair elsewhere instead of allowing them to send to their body shop at the Tustin Auto Center.

Also still having issues during a cold start. When first rolling in forward or reverse, there is some type of vibration or noise coming from the steering or the axles. Service advisor heard it when driving my car to me today, but I want this car for my road trip. :-( Much better than driving a rental CTS. I'll be back at Tustin on Tuesday for my 8th visit in 10,000 miles.

I really wish there was such thing as a lemon law for multiple quality issues.... the above two problems are my 9th and 10th warranty repair issues on this car.

another issue with tustin cadillac... they don't have a code for the 12,000 mile xlr maintenance.

so on my service request, it says i received a 3,000 oil change using mobil 1 oil.

what's the difference between other model cadillac's 3k-6k changes and our xlr 12k changes? what makes the difference?

I'll try to answer some of the questions you have had for the last two posts.
Tod Warner @ Precision Auto about a 1/4 mile north of Allen Cadillac at 27882 Camino Capistrano.
This guy bent over back-wards to make sure the work done on my V was to perfection. The paint blending was better than factory. (949) 364-2600. Tell him Bob Blackman recommended him. I don't know if Tustin will give you a car then.

We get a free lube and oil change at 10,000 mile up to 50,000 miles.............that's all I know.
Having gone through a law suit at Allen Cadillac because they wouldn't do a buy back on multiple http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZS problems, GM bought the car back all costs plus added $15,000, but this took a year and a lousy lawyer.
I would suggest you bring all documentation to Tustin and show them your problems and suggest Gm buy back your vehicle and nicely as you can. If you demand, forget about it. It could work.

I would think he meant ding..................probably the protective coating took a shot and it does look like a dent when the coating comes off, but mearly needs to be clayed out and it would be fine. I picked up Hans GTO and the whole car was loaded with sap or something that made it very rough like sandpaper. I stamped my feet and they clayed the whole car and it is beautiful and smooth now.

synthetic oil is the difference, it's intended to go 10,000 miles between changes.

Did the fix to the knock work?
Mine is at the dealer today for the same problem. I'm concerned because they have never worked on another xlr there.
