"Chilled" Seats

6041 Views 13 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  gb10998
Does anyone know how much/what temperature the cooled seats are supposed to be at? How would you recommend measuring the temperature, just laying a thermometer on the seat?

Its getting hot in NY (97 with high humidity) and the cooled seats ain't makin' it.

I've been driving w/the top down, A/C blasting and the seats on "cool/hi" setting.

How do we know if it's working properly--my seat feels slightly cool to the touch wherever I'm NOT sitting on it, but under the body, and back, it doesn't feel cool at all!

If the "new" dealer touches the seat, it'll feel cool--it basically works, but just barely (MY CAR DEALER JUST GOT CLOSED DOWN FOR TAX EVASION/STEALING THE AUTO REGISTRATION FEE MONEY FROM THE STATE, TO THE TUNE OF 12 MILLION DOLLARS, Gidron Cadillac in Yonkers, NY, that's why I've got to go to a "new" one :yesnod .
:nopity

Gidron was SO competative on price though!

Thanks for any suggestions,

cool seats

I saw somewhere that the maximum reduction of temp was 20 degrees. But logic tells me that where you are sitting covers the perforations and therefore blocks the airflow thru the seat Thus, you are not going to get as much cooling effect at those locations where the perforations are covered. My experience in the Chicago area is that it helps a little, but it'll never feel like sitting on a block of ice.

By the way, the seat cooling works even with the A/c switch turned off.

Seat chiller, NOT!

And to think our German friend, Harry, thinks 97 is too hot to be driving top down. Attaboy Dadonator. Down here in Houston we call that "toasty" - just like we like it. Ice cold adult beverages, stay wet and in the shade is the ticket. When it gets hot, I just drive faster, and leave the a/c ON!

I'm with you Bob. When its toasty outside, the seat "chiller" just makes my back sweat a little less than normal. I don't think there is actually a fan that blows air, however. I think there is just a coil that circulates cold (or not-so-cold) water behind the cushions.

Seat chiller - Good idea but it needs work.
"Chilled" is not the word I would to describe them, but it is a noticable difference.
95 degrees, Black seats, top down I find it's enough to keep me from sweating on the back side and clothes from sticking, but we don't have that high humidity you do either.

That humidity is a B#$^$ back there and I don't know if you can feel the cooling like we can in California or a dry climate, but I guess I'll find out this summer. Going back by XLR on July 9th............can't wait to swelter. I use the passenger seat to keep my water bottle cool, rather than let it boil in the cup holder. There's always the local pool

Cooled Seat Temp

The cooled seat is made possible by a ceramic disc that is located in the lower section of the seat. When this disc is negatively charged the disc will freeze, this process takes about 6-8 minutes. A blower fan will disperse the cooled air throughout the duct work of the seating area then eminating through the perforations.

(See Photo Below)

On Cool/Low the temp is appox. 7-8 degrees below the air temp that is circulating around the seat.

On Cool/High the temp is appox 15 degrees below the air temp that is
circulating around the seat.

Not that chilly

I would agree that the chilled seats on the XLR do not get really cold, only slightly chilled.

On my 2000 Lincoln Navigator (the first car I ever heard of with heated and cooled seats) had a 1 to 5 setting for both heating and cooling (as well as zero, with only circulated air.

At the 5 setting on heat, it could get uncomfortably hot after a few minutes.

At the 5 setting or cold (if you wore shorts in the summer), it again could get downright cold.

But, with 5 settings to choise from, you cvould find something to work almost any time.

I believe the Navigator had the same ceramic (polarized electricity) heat/cool set-up, so unsure why the is such a big difference in function.

I saw that the temp was supposed to be only 15 degrees different from the ambient air - but I've never thought it even got that cold. Seems to be the prevailing opinion of others too.

15 degrees, if the air temp is in the 90's isn't going to feel that cool. 15 degrees if the cabin air is on and you're starting out at 75 may have a little more bite to it.

For a convertible, I would think the engineers would have aimed for a bit more.
Thanks to all!

Appreciate the confirmation that its not broken! I thought it worked a little better last summer, but maybe my leather cleaner/protectant has filled some of the seat holes :confused .

Thanks, as always,

Cooled Seats

I drive around Irvington in my Xenon Blue with the seat coolers on and the top down and the AC on, and it's been great, despite the humidity.
Did you get stuck on Route 9 in the flood this week?
What color is your xlr, Bob?
Road trip, road trip!

On a road trip to Dallas last weekend, I noticed that with the top up and the a/c on, the seat chiller was very apparent. It was 101 degF during the middle of the day, but the cabin was kept at my beloved chill of 68 degF on the low setting. Nothing wrong with the a/c design.

I have noticed a considerable difference in how much more efficiently the a/c operates when placed in the "recirc" mode.

BTW- the bride was not aboard on this trip so the a/c setting of 68 was approved by the "pilot-in-command" (me). :D
To answer GB10998....

Sorry for the delay--went to the beach for the 4th of July week!

I'm in the Xenon Blue with cream interior--I have seen another blue with cream only once on Harriman/Cyrus Field Road--was that you? If so, you do drive a truly fine looking car!
:thumbs

There's also a Crimson Pearl w/cream interior, driven by the New Rochelle Caddy dealer--who lives in Tarrytown--I've seen him in Irvington also, once.

Aviator, I will have to try recirculating the A/C air with the top down--it seems like a waste with the top down, but ANYTHING to help with the heat would be a blessing--especially if the seat coolers benefit from it. Thanks for the "engineer's" advice, as always!

As one Xenon Blue / Shale (cream) interior to another: I have to admit 80 mph on I-45 and 101 degF ambient temp forced me to put the top up during the middle of the day. (Freaking hot!) That is the ONLY way to get the cabin temp to 68 in those conditions.

The point that I didn't make very well is that when the cabin temp is 68, you can really feel the chilled seats. Later that evening when the air in Dallas dropped to a balmy 92, I put the top down, and could barely notice the seat chiller, since it only drops the seat temp by about 15 degrees.

The recirc mode doesn't help the seat chiller per se. It does keep hot air from being introduced into the system making it easier for the a/c to maintain your "set" temp, thereby making the chiller more apparent.

Regardless, a top-down 92 degree summer evening in Dallas was pretty comfortable.

And damn! You have a beautiful carl Are you ever going to post a picture?

I'm in the Xenon Blue with Slate interior. I come down 9 most mornings, and I haven't seen any other xlr's in town yet!
