Storage question,
What battery tender should I consider to purchase? Sears has one for 29.95
that shuts down once the battery is fully charged and then starts up again when needed. Is this basically what I'm looking for?

Many of us swear by the Battery Tender. I stored my car for over a year with one of these connected and my battery has never given me an issue. It periodically pulses the battery to reduce the chances of the cells sulphating.

It comes with an inline quick disconnect, which is pretty handy too.

The charge then maintain algorithms used in these tenders are very sophisticated. Far more than the Sears charge/off/re-charge routine you described.
The "Battery Tender" brand and Schumacher use the more sophisticated routines.
