I felt a 'little rattle' .......

I have been 'hearing/feeling' a little rattle in the frontend of my 2008 XLR since I drove it home. I purchased it as a 'demo' from a new Cad dealer. I was told 'his wife drove it' all 7K miles that were on it. I bought the car in March of 2009, and had it '4 wheel aligned' back in Jan of 2010. I asked the alignment shop to 'look for something in the frontend that would "rattle". They found nothing at that time. The car has been to my local GM dealer for 6 + oil changes and services, without any indication of a problem that might cause MY RATTLE. I was cleaning 'her' up a little and noticed a 'black bracket, with a silver area showing in it'. I took a better look, and right away. OMFG !! The entire core support is HANGING DOWN and is about to fall out of the car ! There are two 'hoops' that attach to the frame rails with brackets, and they hold up the core support. Aluminum is the material that the 'hoops' and the brackets are made of. These 'hoops' act as "skis" or "skids" when you strike a parking stopper or the curb. I don't (never have) struck anything with this car and my wife didn't either (I do believe her REALLY !) SO, I am thinking that the IMPACTS that caused this damage were done BEFORE I bought the car. Makes no difference now, but I can help anyone who requires input on how to completely remove and replace the entire front end on these cars, without doing any paint damage. WITH SIMPLE TOOLS. I put the car on a lift, removed the headlights, air dam, grill/bumper (as one unit), and then TIG welded the damaged brackets and then reassembled the entire mess back together. It took me 4.5 hours on my first (and only !!!) try. The entire assembly was 3/4" down and 3/8" forward, due to the bending of the front vertical portion of the 'hoops' on both sides. IF any of you 'feel a rattle' or just don't know what 'feels different' PLEASE look at the front of your car while it's up on a lift. LOOK AT IT YOURSELF !!! Everything on my car is UNDER WARRANTY EXCEPT IT'S GUTS FALLING OUT DUE TO IMPACT. "Thank GOD I'm a nosy SOB !"

THANK YOU ! But I hope EVERYONE HERE will look under their car the next time it is up in the air ! (like for oil services) The lower radiator hose was 'resting' on the right sway bar frame mounting bracket. I have replaced the hose because it had a 'wear mark' on it. This car has all the "Cadillac Warranty, Gold Certified Top Level BS sales stuff" and yet it had this major problem. The two "skids" under the nose of the car had been 'repainted' prior to my purchase, detailing service or outright fraud ? PLEASE inspect your own vehicles, for your own safety ! PS I did ask for and got a CAR FAX on it. (blank with no problems found) I did get a GM Warranty print out and it had all the 'usual problems' repaired.

I have found that more than one of us seem to forget how low these cars are and pull too far forward and scrape the bottom of the bumper or those steel brackets on curbs or parking blocks.

FWIW: I put insulation hose around those brackets and secured them with zip ties.

I, too, "discovered" that my one week old XLR is lower than my Allante in front! So now I need to inspect and put some rubber on those as well!

Now about the new scrapes on the lower painted bumper...oh well, you can't see them, but I know they are there!

I must say that 'scrapes' would be the least of my problems in this case. The wife and I own a few cars and some are 'very low' and both of us are very carefull when near curbs or parking stopper strips. Those 'brackets' are made of lightweight aluminum tubing and they are SPOT WELDED to aluminum brackets, that are bolted to the frame. IMHO my problem was originated before I purchased the car, not after. IMHO the dealer's service people, my front end guy, (durring 4 wheel alignment) and my local GM dealer (durring oil and service work) didn't SEE ANYTHING, even though I asked all of them to 'seek out a front end rattle', before, durring and after my purchase. I am not 'crying for my own fate', (I fixed it much better than new !) but I am 'sounding off to warn all of you' as to how vulnerable those 'skids' are. IMHO, rubber hoses, or padding will NOT help you in any manner, it is much more structural that 'just padding them up'. IMHO the 8 SPOT WELDS that hold the entire front 'core support' up, IS NOT ENOUGH. I am thinking about a physical sensor arm, mounted below the front bumper area.(remember the old time 'curb feelers' ?) When this arm contacts ANYTHING, it activates an electrical switch that sends 12 V to a light and a buzzer in the ****pit. Just like the rear has it's warning system, but in a 'non-NASA method'. God help those who encounter a large 'thrown truck tire tread' out on the road. That much impact would tear these 'tiny spot welds' from their mounting, without any doubt. PLEASE ! Inspect your own vehicle yourself, for your own safety !

I agree with your idea.

I have a SSR that has a Pioneer NAV and Radio system in it AND a color back up camera. I would like to get a Pioneer type camera to compliment the backup sensors in the "V" and somehow one for the front.

IMHO your camera idea is the optimal solution to this problem. If any of you are able to inspect the 'brackets, tubing and spot welds' that I am speaking of, (under your own cars) you would take immediate measures to control any impacts and all damages. (not just superficial padding) The wife and I take very good care of all our vehicles, as do all of you do. We are original owners our 1972 Corvette (with modifications now), and our 1979 lowered Chevy crew cab dually (work truck) with a turbocharged gas engine. We drive our 1995 Suburban daily along with our 2005 ESV and 2008 XLR. Our business is performance powerboats and we take care of our vehicles. I was very shocked to discover how little protection the 'core support' has in this car. I just want to warn all of you, NO I want to plead with all of you to INSPECT the spot welds that hold up the core support in your cars, ASAP ! This is all I can do. I wish you all good luck and great health.

I for one appreciate your advice and have the mechanical know how to check my "V". However, I think that many--most members here will need to have the dealer do it for them. Hopefully your writeup will enable those who want to have their cars checked to use it to give to the dealer so they can check the right area.

Have you reported your find to the "government" yet??

The dealer would say, "it's been 19 months since you bought the car". YES, I did 'question the rattle on paper' and NO, none of the experts found it. They would all 'point in my direction' and try to put the damage on me (us). THANKFULLY, I found it, I fixed it and I pass the info on to all of you. PLEASE show the dealer where to look and look at it yourselves, with them. Very easy to see the rear tubes and brackets, not so easily seen are the front ones. Good luck/knowledge to you all.

Please help....I may have the same issue.

Sorry to resurrect this old post. But I seem to hear some rattling in the front end. Could you tell me how to accomplish this task. I've had my XLR for 1 week. When I drove it home from San Antonio, I heard some rattling...Any/all input would be great. I'm trying to develop plan of attack. Is this something I can do in my driveway, or will I need a shop?
