XLR Quandry

I just found a 2007 at auction. problem is astronomical mileage (87k) but price is low (20k). would you run from this car or explore further?

XLR14:

Welcome to the Forum!!

YOUR QUESTION: In my assessment I would pass since there are many other XLR's in the market with less mileage on them as fairly good deals.

Of course in the end it is your decision.

Then again... 87K is nothing in miles for the Northstar.
But, as XLR I says, there are other deals to be had, but for more $.
Good luck in your search and your decision.

Question

Hello All, I just bought a 04 XLR in Feb 09. I love it but have had one minor problem.Sometime when I park it, it don't lock into PARK all the way and the door won't open, or the engine won't start. Sometimes I have to move the shifter out of PARK and back again or sometimes I turn the steering wheel to get it to start or get the door to open. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Could it be a linkage adjustment or a sensor problem? Thanks in advance for your help. Griff

Griff:

I haven't heard of this problem before.

My guess is that the reason for the other problems are that the car does lock itself when it thinks it is in gear. So your primary issue is resolving the PARK or NO PARK issue.

Take it to the dealer and see what they need to do to be sure it is properly adjusted.

Regards

Well out here in the Arizona desert, we don't stock parts for "those exotic cars" and so I am waiting on the trans filter/gasket kit and the special fluid and additives for the rear end. Has anyone used RED LINE fluids in their rear ends/trans ??? GM says they like Mobil one gear oil with the additive. I use Red Line oils in my race V-drive boats and my play boats too. I won't brag about money, I'll just say that I love this car and I want to do whats right! Did I mention that I still have my 1976 and 1979 Chevy Pick Up trucks? I also still have my original 1972 Vette, I really love GM products! Can you tell?

AzGeo:

Yea GM/Cadillac is really into the Mobil 1 products--oil and now the transmission/rearend fluids.

I just got back from the dealer with the rear end noise and they used Mobil 1 Posi-traction fluid this time.

So we'll see. It does seem to be quieter now but that is because the fluid is new.

Dang, sorry y'all, I looked for a thread like this and didn't find one so I started my own when I first arrived. I'll repost my forum newbie announcement here:

So, I've had more than five years of loving the XLRs. I saw them built at Bowling Green many a time when I was a Corvette owner. And I've had three years of aching for a V. Long story short, I just got back from signing on an '06 Infrared with Ebony interior, from a dealer 50 miles away from me.

This really has been my ultimate car ambition since the day they started being made, so I guess I join y'all as one of the happiest people alive - an XLR-V owner!

Hello. Recently purchased a Xenon Blue 2004 XLR with 12,500 miles. We have put on about 1,000 miles and absolutely enjoy driving the car whenever the weather is good.

Shortly after the purchase, interesting issues started popping up such as water on the garage floor, the trunk lid would not close, and the temp jumped from about 190 to 220. Took it to the Caddy dealer and they found a bad fan sensor, a leaky radiator, a leaking water pump, bad sensor on the trunk, and the emergency key cylinder is bad, so the key will not work.

Fortunately, we purchased a bumper to bumper and so far the bulk of the costs have been covered. It was in the shop for about 10 days the past two weeks and I took it back today for a few more days of repair. They have to pull the rear facia to replace the emergency key cylinder.

Compared to our older Corvettes and an STS, the XLR is a hoot to drive, very responsive, comfortable, and really nice looking. We just hope it stays out of the shop long enough in the future that we can enjoy it.

Welcome to the XLR Forum.

I think you will find that there a lots of very knowledgeable and XLR experienced members here. So if you don't see what you are looking for just ask and you will end up with your answer.

YOUR PROBLEMS--Well you inherited almost all of the problems that popped up on the 2004's over time and led to improved parts for the follow on years.

I owned one of the first 2004's Xenon Blue and now have a 2008 Black "V".

The replacement radiators are now "V" radiators the water pump is a heavier "V" model as well I was told.

Please read thoorugh the technical area to see what else you may need to look into.

Burnt running lights, brake lines rubbing, rear end clunking (positraction plates sticking) You are more than familiar with that being a Corvette owner. Mobil 1 Rear end fluid fixes that and yes it is under warranty.

Also be sure to check and see how long your battery has been in the car.

I know you will enjoy the car but it will need your maticulous care at first to get it up to snuff as far as the various issues go.

It is recommended that you don't get into the habit of putting the top up or down without the motor running. The process draws a lot of power.

When it is all said and done I know you will really enjoy the car.

Regards
