Onstar button does nothing

I am a new xlr owner and have never had a vehicle with on-star either. I just bought a 2005 XLR and have noticed that the onstar button does nothing? Also noticed that the car does not recognize any voice commands. Could someone have disabled the onstar, are these two issues possibly connected?

Yes it is and the navigation works, but any verbal command gets the response that command can not be found, or something along those lines.

What's the serial and version number on you nav disk. Sounds like you have a newer version that doesn't support voice commands. Its been known to happen .

Those numbers match mine. Have you tried to reinstall the updates?

Your XLR probably has the old analog cellular version of Onstar and it became non-functional when the analog cellular service was phased out several years ago. In the past the dealer could upgrade your system to the digital version and the cost was waived if you continued your Onstar subscription. I am not sure if this option is still available, but you might call Onstar on the landline phone to find out.

The voice recognition part of the nav system never really worked beyound responding to a few words in either my XLR or STS, you can thank Denso for that.

Onalaska is right.

For owners with 2004's and most 2005 owners, Onstar offered an upgrade kit for awhile. First it was free, then the customer kicked in some $$ and finally the whole amount.

Onstar has/had a weird marketing starategy in my own experience with my 2004. I ordered in one of the kits when it was free and had te car in the shop for the upgrade when the Onstar rep walked in ans decided that since they were no longer offering the free upgrade I needed to pay even though my kit was ordered under the free program.

So the dealer called me to let me know that the kit was almost installed and the news from the Onstar Rep. It pissed me off so I had them remove the kit and return it to the rep and I called and cancelled the new Onstar subscription. I haven't had it in any of my cars since and won't.

Not sure what you are talking about, reinstall updates? It is going to the dealer for some other items next week so I am going to have them take a look at this issue as well. I will report back their findings on this thread.
