Why does my car smell of gasoline fumes? I filled the tank yesterday and the garage stinks of gas- Never happened before-no leaks and no drips anywhere.

If you are sure it's gasoline, get it back to your dealer right away.

A number of owners have complained about a glue odor. It is glue which is apparently used quite extensively in the building of an XLR.The odor slowly disssapates. :flag

I had the same problem two weeks ago. I ad just filled up and thought the tank had overflowed. The smell was still there the next day. I finally detected a small spot on the parking deck. After giving it the "sniff" test I took it ti the dealer. They put it on a lift and found evidenc of a leak in the No.1 tank.

From that point on it became a major undertaking. The only way to inspect the tank is to:
Remove the rear wheels
Remove the axles
Remove the transmission and differential
Remove the mufflers and tailpipes
Remove the gas tank
A leak was found at the top of the tank where a hose is attached to connect to the other tank. The solution was to replace the tank. I got the car back yesterday and everything is OK. GM said they had not had this

Just had the same thing happen to my '04. Two days after its return to me the check engine light just came on. Based on the other posts (what a wonderful forum) I'll bet the oxygen sensor is bad.

Looks like a leaky #1 gas tank is a (relatively) common problem.

Wow that has to cost GM $2,000 each repair. I'm glad I will never have this car outside of warrenty.

the gas smell I observed on my XLR was only one time and that was in the first week I´v had it. Since that time no more!

I do know when the pump clicks off don't put anymore in it. This car is more sensetive than others in this regard. If you did that could cause the gas odor. The raw gas pours into the charcoal canister instead of just the fumes.

:iagree Not only that, but genrerally I found out in the beginning that you could only get about a tea cup more gas in it by squeezing in more, not worth the smell or the over pour.

Absolutely my experience too Bob.

I had the same problem in July '05. The mechanic had to seek help from a local Corvette expert. I have photos and will post them if I can figure out how to do it.
The problem has not re-occurred.

My current problem is a message saying my coolant is low(it isn't). Also, the driver side window doesn't close completely until around 5 minutes after starting the car.I often have to use the floor release to get out. It's going to the shop tomorrow. Computers and sensors are wonderful until they malfunction. Then they are a b--ch.

Eight hours of labor for the gas tank replacement. The crack was visible I was told. Add a few more hours for the (apparent) O2 sensor replacement.

Yes, overfilling on the XLR is a very bad thing. As soon as the gas pump clicks off, I stop. All trying to add more fuel will do is to cause an overflow.
