Hey guys. i have a separate thread under coolant right now that could or could not be related but i want your take on this. I just did a round trip to vegas in a few days, and on my way back the low coolant message came on for a short period and turned off. This was the same message i got when i changed the water pump two months ago. havent seen it since. However now the car never goes below 60PSI on the oil pressure level, unless im idling then it kinda bounces back and forth between 40 and 60....even after the engine is up to temperature (which is also a variable right now).

Any insight? I already have an appointment for monday for the coolant message but this could be related (HEad gasket!?!?!) or something else?

Low oil pressure is what you want to be concerned with. Min pressure at idle should be no less than 5 psi and 35 psi @ 2000 rpm. A blown head gasket would probably pollute your oil making it look kind of milky/foamy; the engine temps would be elevated and a misfiring cylinder would make for a nasty idle. How does the car run?

no knocking, no sputtering, no lack of power, nothing to indicate impending doom....which is why im not bent out of shape, its just odd all of this is happening at the same time CC

My car's oil pressure is around 60 at startup and doesn't fluctuate much after that. I have a feeling your car is okay.

took it in today. New Oil control sensor, water pump control module, oil leak, and other paths of discovery they are on....so much for the "much ado about nothing" point of view....at least its all under warranty. I should have it back by wed. im told...if they dont find anything else.

Glad to hear that it was not serious.

Those warrantys are great aren't they?

Exactly why I recommended having it checked by a dealer. Lucklily, all the repairs are minor. From what you're describing, was it a faulty Oil Pressure Gauge Sensor? (There is no Oil Control Sensor.)

There is also no such animal as a Water Pump Control module. The water pump is belt driven with no electrical connections. When you get the vehicle invoice, please describe the names of the replacement parts and associated part numbers so we can all learn from this.

Thanks,
CC

i finally get the car back tomorrow (5 days later) after further scrutiny and digging they found a few leaks, gaskets and other nebulous fixits all covered under warranty, but essentially the engine had to be dropped out of it. if i mispoke on exact engine components/parts i apologize. i will do an itemization for you once i pick it up tomorrow, but even though its an 05, GM is covering it without me even paying my 200 dollar deductible for all of this warranty work due to the extra low mileage (30k barely, on an 05 in an 04 model build). bottom line, it will be a practically new engine barely broken in.
+1 for GM customer service right? at least a xlr tech, and 30 year veteran for cadillac at the dealer (thier resident expert) has performed all repairs front to back. yay. :)

Four pages long.....and five days later, a little "low coolant" light made me take the car in for a "checkup" after just doing its 30k service 1500 miles ago.

1.part numbers

12573569
12580850
qty 8 12576396
12576395
12576394
qty 2 12567085
12567657
12567656
qty 2 12567085

2. work labor

added Op-left actuator housing and solenoids are leaking oil. dound on line 4 by tech, and inspected by SB. .335 SLB added

Oil leaking from housing gasket at lower corners
oil leaking through actuator magnet solenoids
replace actuator housing gasket, 2 magnets, camshaft cover gasket and plug seals

added op alignment due to cradle being dropped (see line 4)
335 SLB out of alignment. alignment checked and set to spec after repairs
repeat concern "customer states coolant light intermittently on"

coolant at correct level, no leaks.
shortened coolant sensor found
PRessure test system for leaks
replace coolant surge tank under further inspection

customer states oil pressure seems high.
Defective oil pressure sensor found, use tech 2 to test oil pressure.
oil pressure sensor replaced due to faulty functioning.

27 point inspection:
engine oil manifold leaking
not sealing
labor for cleaning parts
labor for removing broken main bolt
outer main bolt replaced right side of engine
replace engine manifold plate
replace and reseal engine oil pan gasket
replace necessary gaskets, fluids and seals.

Cost of this EFFING mess?? zero dollars due to low miles and GM customer loyalty. :) but wtf??? 31k on a northstar, i mean its an 05 but this is a ton of work? what gives?

Thanks for sharing. The majority of the parts you listed are gaskets. Close to $400 for everything listed, which is cheap for these cars. The labor is the real killer. The oil manifold runs $155; the two magnets are $50 ea. No part numbers for either sensor?

Be glad it wasn't a head gasket issue. Those were a big concern on the previous N*s and cost thousands out of warranty. You're lucky to have a good dealership that takes care of you.

Rock on in your "new" XLR!

thanks CC. the irony is yes it was over 3800 in labor they said, plus the parts. however i did have a warranty that covers everything on the car until 2017 or 129,983 miles...they STILL got GM to pay for it so i didnt have to pay my 200 dollar deductible. hows that for service?

they did have the car since monday morning til fri afternoon. Thumbs up to GM for customer satisfaction and loyalty.
