My HUD is no longer working in my 04 xlr. What are the steps to replacing it?
Are there any recommendations as to the best place to purchase one?

WELCOME TO THE XLR FORUM!!

I am very sorry to learn about your HUD problem.

This is a first on this forum.

You don't say how the HUD happened to stop working.

However I would recommend that you check the user manual for a fuse location to see if one burned out and check to see if the HUD dimmer somehow got turn too far down.

If these suggestions don't work, you could invest in a trip to the dealer to let them diagnose the root cause and what needs to be done.

There are scrap yard locators that may turn up a used one BUT having said that I don't think I would want to do the job.

Regards

Jerry

Fuse #26 under the passenger side footwell carpet (have to pull the carpet back to expose the panel that covers the fuses) protects the HUD and Instrument Panel. If your IPC indicators are working but your HUD isn't, that's not the problem.

If you're really, really, lucky it's a wiring or loose connector problem. If you're really, really unlucky, and the HUD is bad, you may have a heck of a time getting a replacement part. I checked online and all of my parts sources show "No Items Listed" for the 2004-2005 HUD. (2006 and beyond have a multi-colored HUD.) Those retail for just over $700. I don't know if they're backwards-compatible, but I wouldn't get too excited about that.

If that isn't bad enough, replacement is a big job, requiring the dash to be disassembled into many pieces. The labor charge would be enough to frighten a veteran lab monkey.

My advice is to have your dealer scan it with their Tech 2 to islolate the problem. If it's the really HUD, maybe they can find one for you in the time it takes to decide which kidney you wish to donate to pay for it all.

Keep us posted. HUD problems are rare, so we can all learn from this.

CC :cheers

Right after I got my XLR I thought the HUD had stopped working. It turned out that by not knowing everthing I should have about the controls on the dash I had readjusted the HUD so that it was not showing up on the windshield. After playing around i got it back where I could see it. If you are lucky that is what has happened to you.

I would suggest eliminating the simplest causes first, no insult intended;

1. Did you just buy Polarized Sunglasses? HUD is not visible with those (at least those that I've used)!
2. Inadvertent adjustment of HUD position too high or too low.
3. As suggested earlier, HUD dimmer adjustment too dim?
4. Dimmer selector switch in-between positions of Dash or HUD select, or switch is bad.

Good luck!

I went with my wife to test drive an 04 before we decided to buy one. She went with the salesman first and then I drove it second. On the way back home we're talking about the car and she asks me what I thought of the HUD. I wasn't even thinking about it at the time as I was smashing the pedal to the floor on the on ramp to the interstate.. but I didn't see anything. She was like.. what are you talking about you didn't see anything?? I thought maybe I hadn't "turned it on". She proceeded to inform me it automatically comes on... I was beginning to become perplexed at this point.. I thought, there's no way I just looked through it and didn't ever see it. It drove me nuts thinking about why I didn't see the HUD and she did.

A week later I'm in Miami taking my new car for a test drive. It's raining and she didn't want to drive it so I drove it first this time. Get in the car, wham.. HUD all in my face. Sweet! Now, I'm even more confused why I didn't see it the first time.. :skep

A couple days later I'm over at a buddy's house and I'm going to take him for a spin. Jump in the car, start her up... HUD all in my face. Alright, we're ready to roll, glasses on... wham, HUD disappears. :cool I was elated at this point. It just all clicked together..

On the first test drive it was a bright sunny day so I got in the car with the sunglasses already on. Never saw the HUD. Went I bought the car and took it for a test drive, it was raining.. no sunglasses.

O.K. Checked the fuse, it is good.
The HUD just started getting dimmer, then went completely out.
Where would be the best place to try and trouble shoot for loose wiring? Is is going to require pulling the dash out?

Yup. That's where the wires are. It's no small job either.

Pulling the dash is not easy. Get a Tech-2 scan first I suggest.

Based on that symptom, I'd check the dimmer switch first and then the dimmer control electronics chain. Just trying to eliminate the HUD display until all else checks ok.

To rgc, my 06 Hud was working intermitety for about a month, had a new battery installed (not because of the Hud) and it has been ok the last 6 months. Dont ask why or how, its a XLR thing. Good luck.

It's been a couple of months since your last post on this:seeya. Have you resolved this? Care to share?

Thanks.
