Asking this question because I had a 06' XLR locally all picked out but it sold before I could get financing for it. There is a XLR-V up in LA for sale with a warranty for about 9K more which is not a big deal for me. Financing is now secured and its a dealer purchase.

Same miles, but in Black/Black instead of Red/Cream. It looks mean in black.

So is it worth the price of admission, did anybody buy a XLR then go V, or more hassle then the stock XLR?

I live in SoCal so the loss of adaptive cruise control is my biggest hit, and there is not a lot of room to really use the loud pedal around here. But I do have a track car for when I want to go really fast. My last singular daily driver was a SRT-10 Viper and I found that quite comfortable except for the road noise and crappy top.

Increase in payment and gas is not a deterrent for me but having never driven one I don't know if the ride is significantly different then the normal XLR which I really like. Its a 4 hour drive up and then 4 hours back to see it.

Also how good is the black paint on the Cadillac. Its a big flat angle car and its looks mean in black when its clean.

I've owned both and many of us have. I prefer the "V" for a number of reasons, but you're right about the cruise control, that is the only option I missed. Many don't use it though. They were both black.

Like Floyd said many of us have owned both. i had a 2004 Xenon Blue with Shale interior and now have a 2008 XLR -V Black/Cashmere.

In my assessment I would try and locate a 2008 V because there were many enhancements made to the transmission, interior and top mechanics.

Also, try and get a GMPP Warranty since you are now using a dealer.

Good Hunting!!

If I didn't already own a high HP ride I wouldve gone with the V. I'm not a fan of the Maggie supercharger but since it's OEM I would do it. If the 08 did have some tranny enhancements, which they needed, you can always get Chuck Cow to copy or best what GM did through a retune if you don't find an 08 in the price you like.

The V is absolutely INSANE!!! Do it and never look back

A friend had an 05 base that I drove a couple times in 06 and it was nice. So when I started looking for mine, that's where I started. The first time I drove a V, though, I was convince instantly that the base would never do. Totally different character, just what I was looking for!

Well I made a offer on a 06 XLR-V in LA in Black/Black/Black see what they say. Its basically a cash offer as my bank will just drop the cash into my account. If they accept I will drive up tomorrow or Sunday in the morning and give it a quick testdrive and make the decision.

They say that it is under warrenty maybe a few months left of the powertrain though as it was a 06 and mihgt have been sold late. They have not confirmed that I can put it on a GMPP contract through which is what is holding me up. That and they have not accepted the offer.

An '06 can't be covered under the original warranty. Now that the warranty has run out you're not able to get a GMPP warranty either.

If $$$ isn't a great concern you should be looking at an '08.

But lotsa luck in whatever you decide.

If I cannot get the GMPP should I pass? I have had great luck with Chevy folding tops in the past, both my SSR's had thousands of cycles on them, and its the only thing that is not covered by the other extended GM warrenty right?

Not sure I know of another GM warranty. Unfortunately, it isn't just the top that could possibly give you problems. The XLR, like a Benz, are not cars you'd want to have without a warranty, just my opinion.

I'd still look at a newer model, 08 would be fine.

I would listen to those who advise you get a 2008V. If my 2007 would not have had a warranty I would be bankrupt. There is a million and one things that can go wrong with all new cars and the dealers do not always know how to solve the problems and you are paying dearly while they learn.
The car goes fast enough without the V, but because GM does such a good job of pushing the V in advertisements, everyone asks you if it is a V and you have to say no, it is only the small one. Also the newer models have the 6 speed trans and the lights that turn with the steering wheel plus other improvements. I would take the time to read all of the comments on this site and the XLR Forum. They gave me a lot of information of what to look for when buying a XLR. It takes a lot of time, but you will not be buying blind.

Blue would be a better color for me. I have made a few calls on local ones as well but most people want more for there private party car then the dealers want around here. Don't know why.

FYI I used to be a mechanic a lifetime ago and I am a electrical/mechanical engineer as my day job so if I can get a wiring diagram I can fix most anything. It looks like most of the issues are electrical not mechanical, not like rods coming through blocks. Most of the stuff I work with is 100x times more complex then a XLR and other then the special ECU readers that the dealer has. Might just chance it.

After mothers day brunch I am going to take a drive up to LA and see the black one with my father.

You're right; the majority of the repairs on this vehicle seem to be module-related.

As an aside, if you're considering DIY repairs on this car, you might want to think about investing in a Tech 2 scan tool. I'm an engineer too, and a shop manual loaded with drawings and a multi-meter just aren't going to cut it with this vehicle. If you've got a protocol analyzer and the source code for both of the GM LANS in the XLR, you're good.

New Tech 2's can be found on eBay for around $2k. They're essential if you don't want to be tied to a dealer for repairs. Or . . . you can invest in an extended warranty. Either way, you're doing your homework prior to a purchase and that's smart. Many owners fall in lust with this vehicle without fully realizing what they're getting into and subsequently suffer though a bitter auto-divorce.

And that's why we have forums like this!
