I test drove a silver 2006 today (31,000 miles). One odd thing I noticed. The rear suspension felt real spongy. I would go over slight humps in the road and the rear end would bounce once or twice after the bump. Kind of like the rear shocks were bad and just using the springs.

I did a search on shocks, but nothing came up. Is this normal? It is a very unsettling feeling.

Welcome to the XLR Forum.

Suspension--Nope not normal. If the car is still under warranty the Cadillac dealer can decide if the electronic suspension or the actual shocks are the culprit.

Greetings,

I would raise this concern with the Cadillac dealer you are looking to buy from. Check out the warranty options and you should be covered under warranty for a used vehicle if you purchased it from the Cadillac dealership.

I hope this helps,

The rear on my '06 felt unsettled and my service advisor indicated that it could be the tires (which were showing wear, but not totally gone). I was seriously considering installing a V rear sway bar, but after replacing the tires found a marked improvement.

This may not be the same thing that you are experiencing, but do check the tires to make sure that they are in good condition, have proper pressure and that they are the correct tires for the car. The run-flat tires have a more rigid side wall and replacing with non-run flats could also cause a spongy feeling. Also, if you are serious about buying the car it is important to make sure the tires are new or near new. Replacements set you back about $1000 or more.

From your description, I'm not sure a rear sway bar would help, it makes the back more responsive in a curve (and you feel a bump under one side more). It shouldn't affect the response after the bump much.

Tire pressures are worth a check, I run my rears a pound or two lower as the center of the tire wears too quickly otherwise. Usually though excessive tire pressure makes you bounce off every minor bump in the road, the feel is one of harshness, I'm not sure it would result in the bounce you are describing, but long distance diagnosis is always a tricky affair.

In summary, no, not normal. These are performance cars and should handle well, though the lack of rear anti-sway bar is limiting.
