So using Mobil one is also new to me, what is the normal oil pressure range? It has been around 40 PSI. Yesterday on a cold start it jumped to 70 PSI?? Oil life is at 53 percent can anyone lead me to what a cold XLR oil pressure should be.

Dennis:

Welcome to the Forum.

I am sure you will find a lot of detailed information about your new ride here.

Mobil 1 as you may know is the recommended oil for the Xlr and a growing number of other GM cars.

When your oil life gets to 25% or lower you can change it and the filter.

Regarding your question about pressure your geographic location and the seasonal temperature there will have a bearing on the answer as well as the weight of the oil in the XLR and the speed your are traveling or whether or not you are at idle with a cold or warm engine.

I would continue to keep an eye on erratic pressure and the conditions as mentioned above at the time. 40 psi doesn't raise an eyebrow from my point of view but 70psi would if I wasn't "cold sart idling" or traveling at a fairly high speed---4-5k rpms or higher.

70psi on a cold start I would view as OK at above idle rpm. As your XLR warms up, that will drop quickly. Compared to previous GM vehicles I have owned, the N* seems to run at lower oil pressures.

Agreed. On many cars, you are going to find starting oil pressure 20-30 above the normal running pressure. Why? I believe it is due to the fact the oil is cold and therefore thicker. At any rate, this will usually drop within a few minutes of running the engine. Keep an eye on it and make sure it does. If it doesn't, you have a problem somewhere else. Could be a pinched feeder, etc etc.

I use 10/30 Mobil due to high daytime temps. Durring the summer months, I see cold oil at high pressures and hot oil at 'under 1/4 mark' at idle. (20 lbs ?) When the temps get colder, I see much higher pressures throughout the engine running temp ranges. Today (85 F) idle pressures were around 1/3 or (aprox) 35 lbs. I do have 'a little motor noise' around 1800 RPMs under light loads. (when hot or cold) I think it's the VVT system durring adjustments, but I don't know for sure. I will change to 5/30 Mobil for the winter months. Both the wife and I allow the motor to get 'some heat' prior to driving up the road. We may 'warm up' from 90 sec to 3 minutes, prior to driving away. I NEVER go above 2500 RPMs when the temps are below 'normal'.
