The Whistler

Good morning all,

Not sure if this is the right section for this but I guess it could be.

A couple of days ago the X started whistling...and it persists. It does not change frequency based on speed, or wheter moving or not, except it takes a minute for it to begin once the car is started. So, I'm guessing a vauum leak of some sort. Having roamed around the car, I can't seem to pinpoint it, although at one point, I thought it sounded stronger near the rear of the car than the front.

Any one have any similar experiences and solutions?

Thanks,

Do you have a stock exhaust system? Have you looked at the tips to see if anything is trapped inside them? (Stock tips are open to the atmosphere at both ends.)

Occasionally I hear a whistle-like noise that goes away when I shut off the climate control, and then it doesn't return for a long time. I suppose I ought to be checking the cabin filter and ductwork, but I never remember to do so.

Thinking some more about vacuum leaks, could this be a leak round the gas filler cap? (If so, you will be close to a fault code and warning, you will need a new cap.)

For checking those vacuum hoses, I would definitely try putting some gentle soapy water on them. And I agree with the exhaust, especially around the cat, since I hear those can cause some whistling problems, too.

I appreciate your taking the time to think about my problem. I never say never, but the cap was replaced about a month ago. Doesn't mean it's not the culprit anyway. I'll check it out.

I will check out both areas and report back.

Thanks for the help.

I find it interesting that many are stating they get the whistler too. I have had this happen to me - usually once a month and during changes in temperature. It usually goes away within a few minutes of driving.

I assumed there is a leak or insufficient seal but when the car warms up it re-seals itself. I also can not pinpoint the exact location as by the time I start looking it goes away before troubleshooting can significantly occur.

My lack of follow up has been due to the spontaneous disappearance of the sound. Not complaining mind you, and I suspect it will be back at some point, but for now, no whistling.
