I was wondering if someone could upload the instructions on how to change the belt on the 2004 XLR. Please it would be much appreciated!
Which belt?
I am taking this from a diagram on page 6-77 of the 2004 workshop manual.
Clockwise, directions as seen FROM the FRONT of the engine (i.e. these directions are backwards to the convention of describing everything as if standing at the back of the car looking forward)
Alternator (front belt):
Crank top going right, under water pump on back of belt, goes up, 180 degrees round an idler and down, 180 degrees round alternator (back towards center of engine now) going up, 180 degrees round idler and down to bottom of crank.
Air conditioning compressor (rear):
Bottom of crank and up to left, 180 degrees round idler, and down (and a bit to the right) 180 degrees round compressor and up, about 130 degrees round power steering and then back to top of crank.
To remove the front one is easy, you will need a half inch drive breaker bar to release the tension. You also have to lift the car.
To remove the rear one, remove the front one first. It is much more difficult, you have to remove the power steering reservoir, release the tension in the belt and then remove the tensioner mechanism.
I don't know why it is necessary to remove the power steering reservoir, but if it is just to create some space, it just lifts off (pull up vertically). If more room is needed then it will be necessary to drain the power steering fluid and disconnect the hoses. Doesn't look over hard, but possibly not required? It isn't clear if the power steering reservoir bracket also has to come off.
To take off the tension, put a wrench on a nut on the tensioner arm (roughly in the middle), take the load and drop the belt off the power steering pump. Now release the tension and remove the two bolts holding the tensioner assembly in place. The second bolt is removed from underneath having raised the car.
Now remove and replace the belt. The tensioner bolts are 25 N.m / 18 lb ft.
When putting the belts back, apply tension gently and ensure belts are correctly routed before starting up.
Final step:
"Start the engine and inspect for proper belt and accessory operation."
