well I don't actually own an XLR but a buddy of mine has one that I get my hands on every now and then, however, it seems like every time I get into it something is wrong.
Lil bit about the car, its a 2004 black, all stock. A lot of people drive the car off the top of my head I know of at least 6 :boxing. I was on here about a year ago because the top wouldn't go back down and my buddy was freaking out...two hours later we got it down.
The top is still messed up, the cd player is jacked up, the power steering pulley whines and the doors are picky about when they want to work. Thank god for the manual lever.
I have always been messing with cars so i have had a decent amount of time around this car but I am not an expert! All I can say is...talk about a picky son of a gun!
With all that being said I thought I would go ahead and join to learn some more and see what others have done.

Welcome!!
There are answers here to most of your questions about your friends XLR.
Having said that and the fact that it isn't under any warranty. I would reserve things like the top for the dealer to fix.
KEY FOB--Change the battery in both key fobs and see if it is any easier to get into the car. If not there is a software/security fix at the dealer for your issue. I can't say for certain if it will cost him or not.
TOP ISSUES--The same is true about the top. You may need the latest top software and some new sensors installed to resolve all of the isues.
POWER STEERING--There are several reasons for the power steering to whine--bad pump pully or pully bearings, loose or worn belt, low on fluid or a bad power steering pump.
CD PLAYER "JACKED UP"--I have no idea what you mean by this statement. If you will clairify it there may be a simple resolution.

I think he means the CD PLAYER does not play CD's or its skipping. I had the same issue with that and eventually it got so bad that nothing wanted to play. I tried cleaning the laser but that didn't work so I went to the dealer and they installed a brand new unit in my car! All I had to pay was the $100 deductible.

You may be right OR he is trying to play home made CD's on the player in the wrong format.

key fob and top I knew about and a new power steering pump is on the way. The belt is pretty new and is good on fluid. The CD player almost sounds like its growling haha. I am pretty sure that there is a CD in there that someone forced in there, (cough his cousin cough) and that will most likely have to be replaced.
I absolutely love this car! so if someone is reading this thinking about getting one, majority of these issues are due to others not the actual car!
on a side note...I was out last night working in the garage and the car was sitting in the driveway when these two very good looking girls drive by all slow...and then they blew it...all i heard was "I think its a beamer?"
I was so disappointed I grabbed a beer and called it a night HA
