I'm thinking about an XLR convertible and am wondering what type of sensors/labels are in the trunk to prevent the driver from folding the roof onto an item stored in the trunk (suitcase, gym bag, etc)? Is the system fool proof or can accidents happen (damage to the roof)? Any information would be appreciated.

Welcome to the XLR Forum.
There are sensors to prevent top damage when lowering it into the trunk.
Also, there is a package separator tray that has sensors if it isn't engaged the top won't drop into the trunk.
Lastly, nothing should be placed in the area where the top is stored while in it's down position.
Nothing is totally fool proof. But if things aren't right the top will stop in the middle of the cycle.
I hope this helps.

The Folding Top has a pair of self-regulating DPS (Damage Prevention Sensors). These are round, close to an inch in diameter and located on either side of the bridge of your nose. If you disable them or ignore their data stream while lowering the top into less space than it requires, you run the risk of severe damage to your Folding Top, bank account, and psyche. The owner's manual is pretty clear about this: DON'T. :nono
If you're the type of person who absent-mindedly places coffee cups (or baby carriers) on the roof while entering and then driving away on a routine basis, this could become an issue for concern. --If not, then you'll probaby love the car. With caveats:
The windows have an anti-trap feature that monitors the motor current as the windows are raised. If the motor current rises unexpectedly before the window has reached its fully raised (indexed) position of travel, the window motor reverses direction and lowers the window, freeing your head, arm or extended middle finger. I have never seen a similar feature for the Folding Top documented. Theoretically, if the top doesn't complete it's expected travel to the learned parameters, it should stop, but at that point, it's probably crushed that carton of four dozen eggs you placed back there while in a hurry earlier. :mad
The best habit to ingrain to avoid finding out if the top will preserve itself or not is to always position the luggage barrier flat, on the trunk floor if anything is stored in the trunk. Whenever I place ANYTHING back there, I lower the luggage barrier which opens a switch in the left side of the luggage barrier receptacle. With the switch open, the Folding Top can't operate. Simple, effective and free.
Has anyone got a (Doh!) damaged Folding Top story to share?

Thats good. I like you the more I read your post's It's too bad you live on the left side of the country. We have fun over here. You are correct, If you do any damage it is an id10t error.
