: Help with Warranty
Keep really close to being a owner of a 2005 XLR. Have one question for all. The factory warranty has expired and the car has 50k on it. Where is the best place to get a Bumper to Bumper warranty and any idea of cost?
Thanks for the help.:cheers

The GMPP warranty is the only protection plan that covers the folding top that I'm aware of. If you've been reading the many posts on this site to learn about the XLR, you've undoubtedly noticed the top can be one of the more troublesome systems on the vehicle. Sensors and switches are the usual suspects, and don't cost an arm and a leg. Bad hydraulic pumps and Folding Top Control modules are pretty reliable, but expensive. A broken hydraulic line can ruin your whole day, --especially if it ruptures behind the headliner.
I bought my car out of warranty. While shopping for an extended warranty, I had several salesman tell me the top was covered. When asked to show me in writing, none could. :skep
If you purchase an XLR that is out off warranty, you take your chances. Some of us get lucky, some do not. If you want to go for an out-of-warranty 2005, run the VIN through CARFAX or have your dealer print the vehicle maintenance history to ascertain what (if any) repairs have been performed.
Price and cosmetics should NEVER be the determining factor when purchasing a used XLR. If you acquire a problem child, (unlike the lady who sent the psychotic kid she adopted back to Russia last week) you may end up with more than you bargained for with no recourse. :cry
I think the vast majority of XLR owners would tell you these vehicles offer a unique driving experience that just seems to get better with the passage of time. The reliability while pretty good, isn't perfect, --so you're smart to be thinking about maintenance costs. :yesnod
Here's an excerpt from the GMPP website FAQ regarding your question:
http://www.gmprotectionplan.com/faqs.html
Can I renew or extend a GM Protection Plan?
In most cases, yes. Coverage can be renewed anytime during the manufacturer's warranty. After the manufacturer's warranty has expired, coverage can be renewed if the existing GMPP/Mechanical Repair Protection contract has at least 2 months and 2,000 miles of coverage term remaining.
--In other words Bret, if a vehicle's warranty has expired, it isn't eligible for the GMPP warranty.
There are a wide variety of aftermarket warranty plans available. Google away and shop around to find the best deal. Other owners on this forum can tell you about their experiences. --In my case, I bought a GM diagnostic tool, which cost less than a warranty and allows me to troubleshoot the car in my garage. Plus, after a few years, I can always sell the tool and recoup most of my investment, --unlike a warranty. It's all a big gamble when it comes to insurance. Hopefully, you never need it, but it's great to have if you do.
You're asking all the right questions Bret, so I have little doubt you will end up with an XLR that has you sporting an ear-to-ear grin each time you walk into your garage and spot it waiting to take you anywhere.

Also please go to the Technical Section and the Warranty and Top Section. Most everything you want to know about warranty's and Tops is posted there including what happens if you don't have one, and cost/contacts.

Thanks for the help.

presten 11-16-2010, 05:03 PM We purchased a used (2250 miles) 2009 XLR from a dealer in Roseville, CA. The car had been sitting on their lot for a couple of months (this becomes significant) prior to our purchase. During the delivery of the car, there was never a word said about the Premium Care Program...in fact, I just happened to see it as I looked over the Owners Manual and Warranty Booklet. When I contacted GM and Cadillac to get the coverage we were told that since notification of ownership change from the original owner, (not the dealer) had not taken place within 30 days we were not eligible for that coverage. Now, there was no place in any of the documents or manuals that we received, that mentioned the 30 days and in fact they stressed that the coverage is " transferable to any subsequent owner". Since the car had been well beyond the "30 days", as it sat on the lot, Cadillac says "too bad, no Premium Care Program for you!"
Have any of you out there had any problems getting the PCP coverage on you cars? I would like to hear from anyone that has been able to make the transfer. We plan to press on very hard on this issue as we feel that it is very wrong what they are doing. Any help from XLR owners would be appreciated.

I transfered the Primum Care when I bought my '06 several years ago from a private, non-Cadillac dealer and had not problems with the transfer. It WAS done within 30 days of MY purchase of the car from that dealer. My understanding is that the transfer must be made within 30 days of your purchase - not from the time of previous owner trade-in.
At the time of my purchase, Mr XLR (a top XLR salesman and XLR specialest) was very active on this forum and stressed the 30 day transfer rule since many GM/Cadillac dealers were not aware of this. I believe that up until 2011 the XLR was the only Cadillac that came with Premium Care included as standard (someone else may be able to verify this), so many dealers were not aware of the transfer policy. There is a $50 fee for the transfer as well.

I just discovered that my 2008 "V" was not transferred either and I had to bite the bullet.
I am not sure whether I am madder at the selling or the servicing dealer for not pointing this out since I literally took delivery of the car and the next morning it was in the sevicing dealer for a oil change and other stuff.
When the discovery was made the service was still in the original owners name after a year had gone by.
So far I am out 1 oil change for $80.
