: RAP for power outlets
majik755 03-28-2010, 11:10 AM Does anyone know if the power to the cigarette lighter and/or the power outlet in the console turn off with the car. I was trying to decide if I can leave a phone charger plugged into either one, but the power light on the charger stayed on in both when I shout off the car. I thought it might be the RAP power, but even when I use the fob to lock the car (which usually turns off any RAP items) they both stayed illuminated. Given the ghost power drain the these cars I'm reluctant to leave the charger plugged in, even with the phone disconnected. Anyone know for sure? Previous cars I had never left power on to the cigarette lighter after the ignition was off, not sure about the accessory power in the console.
XLR I FL 03-28-2010, 01:01 PM CC will be the best source for this question I think.
I too am surprised that the cigerette lighter power is on constantly. It should be "switched power" as you mentioned.

Kahuna 03-28-2010, 02:00 PM I believe you will find that the power is on a timer and will turn off after several minutes. This is my 3rd Caddy and I am positive that the power turns off on my DTS after several minutes (can be annoying if you are using a power outlet for a car vac as this is how I first discovered this function). This is also the case with the radio if you are parked with the engine off (like eating a burger while listening to the radio).
This is also the case with interior, trunk and other lights. It's a convenience function allowing time to remove luggage, etc., but protecting the battery in case you forget to turn off a map light or vanity light.
majik755 03-28-2010, 02:49 PM Kahuna,
That's what I thought too, but I just tried it. The radio is off, lights and everything else out, but the cigarette lighter and inside power outlet are still powered. Seems weird since the RAP circuit is there so you can listen to radio and do some other things for a while with the car off, but doesn't seem the case here.
I'm definitely not in accessory mode, it's off. Usually anything that is on retained power turns off when I manually lock the car using the key fob, that also is not the case here. Strange design or problem with my car...
majik755 03-28-2010, 03:22 PM i always thought that even those RAP accessories would shut down when you lock the car using the key fob. If my radio is on and I hit the lock its shuts down the radio. The power outlets in my XLR do not shut down with the radio when I use the fob lock.
At the risk of having to recharge the battery, I'll give it a try. I'll plug it in, lock her up and check back in 20 or so...
Gives me time for one or two :cheers
majik755 03-28-2010, 03:24 PM Test underway.
Shut off car, radio left on and stayed on, interior lights stayed on, lighter and power outlet stayed on. Outside car, locked with key fob... radio turned off, interior lights turned off, running lights turned off, horn beeped. Lighter and power outlets both are still powered. I'll check back in 20 mins.
majik755 03-28-2010, 04:02 PM Test complete, while everything else turns off in a few minutes or with the fob lock, the two power sources cigarette lighter and console power remained hot between 20 -30 minutes after everything else was shut down. Not sure I like that, would prefer at least one shut down with everything else, but they do cut out after 20+ minutes so I guess your battery would not get drained. Thanks all, another lesson learned.
ccclarke 03-28-2010, 07:10 PM RAP is twenty minutes per the Book. Your timing may vary.
:cheers CC
XLR I FL 03-29-2010, 09:40 AM Now there's a perameter that would be nice for the owner to be able to adjust and set.
JOHN94404 11-06-2010, 09:20 PM Here's the pertinent text from the 2006 XLR Owner Manual -- and I bet it applies to all model years ...
Battery Run-Down Protection
Your vehicle has a feature to help prevent you from
draining the battery in case the underhood lamp, vanity
mirror lamps, cargo lamps, reading lamps, console
or glove box lamps are accidentally left on or in case
something is plugged into the accessory power outlet or
cigarette lighter. If you leave any of these lamps on,
they will automatically time-out after about 20 minutes.
To reset it, all of the above lamps must be turned
off or the ignition key must be in ON.

monepit 11-08-2010, 06:34 AM I encountered this with my Eldorado. The outlet stays on longer than the RAP circuits, but it will shut off. It never stayed on long enough to give me a good charge on the phone. As in the previous post, the battery saver circuit will kick on and shut off power after a while. Unfortunately it is not ling enough for a full charge.
