Does anyone know FOR SURE what type of communication a 2008 XLR-V has? (Class 2, GMLAN11, GMLAN 29 bit, etc)

thanks!

Welcome to the XLR Forum.

To answer your question just wait for CC to read your post. He'll know.

Great question! Hard-to-find answer. I've spent two hours searching the web, trying to find a definitive, no-sxxt answer to your question. While I'm pretty sure the '07 has a 29-bit GMLAN message format, I can't prove it (yet.)

--One source that may know is PAC-Audio.com. I'll call them tomorrow and see what they have to say and report back, unless someone beats me to it!

Stay tuned for more hair-raising XLR trivia,

its a combo of class2 and gmlan29 - it has both.

Thanks,, in reading the service manuals (for hours) it does appear to have both, depending on where. It looks like mostly Class2, the reason I ask is no one apparently offers an Nav/DVD in-motion over-ride,, so I am doing it myself.

I simply put in a switch to disconnect the VSS wire from the nav so I can enter addresses while moving.. but if you come up with a fancy class2 system to do that, I'd love to learn more about it!

thanks,, I will. I had it apart this weekend, and forgot to "switch" the VSS wire,, but I heard that does work as far as Nav in-motion. Still working on the DVD in-motion functionality and how it see's "Park". It sure would be nice to correct from a software standpoint, as would be easiest. It would also be interesting to know what code to enter into the diag screen (holding down note key) or if there are any secret code or button presses that would help. I have tried the often mentioned "1791", which it takes without an error, however it simply returns to the previous screen with zero apparent changes taking place. More to come,,,

I installed a custom made lockpick on my 2005 STS. It switches off the VSS signal to the Nav and disconnects the GPS antenna with a small relay. I am tempted to try the same on the XLR. If you don't disconnect the GPS antenna it will appear to work and then lock you out.

Whatever is causing the screen to stop playing (displaying) a DVD or that enables the "in-motion" feature has zero to do with the VSS wire (speed) or the GPS signal, I have been working on this parked in my garage with the engine off, the second you move the gear shift lever the DVD stops being displayed. you move the lever a fraction of an inch either way and it starts and stops again. And it has nothing to do with the park switch located at the shifter, you can completely unplug all of the wire connectors from the gear shift lever assy and it still stops playing the second you move it out of park. So the signal is definitely coming from a "park" signal somewhere, and not the shifter, so maybe at the transmission where the lever is moving there,, still working on.

Using the VSS wire alone will cause the timeout and lock you out like you said... but just flipping the switch again will bring it back... not a big deal.

Have you started to monitor the Class2 and LAN datafeed to see if its in there?

This is great. There are advantages to having an 04. I wouldnt want to get a newer one just for this. I use the 1791 and the nav overide all the time. It would be a pita to not have these shortcuts.

I TOTALLY AGREE!!! How easy would just entering a code be. It would be nice to know if their is one for an 08,, as it has the code entry screen, the only problem is 1701 does nothing when you enter it. Is there a code for this screen (on an 08)? this screen (diag screen by holding the note key) has to have a function???

There is no known code; you need an obsolete '04-05 to enjoy this luxury. :lol
Let your fingers do the talking and you may discover one!

The 1791 code also works in my 2006 XLR, so you should revise the build years.

Thanks for the update! What is the build date and last 5 VIN #s of your car?

Hi CCclarke,

I do not know the build date but the last 5 didgits of the VIN are 00429.
It's a 2006 STAR BLACK LIMITED EDITION #165/250 XLR and was first put into service on 11/26/2006.
I purchased it on 12/15/2007 with 10,250 miles on it.

I have learned from D3 that it CAN NOT be re-programmed to the European specs because it is one of a few XLRs that has a Siemens micro-P that is hard coded.
D3 did the Volant Cool Air Intake and the Corsa exhaust and I have added 2 e-Racing Motorsports electric superchargers and a nineth, 1978 Corvette Cold Start fuel injector, because the ECM could not react fast enough or would not increase the fuel mixture to match the increase in air flow produced by the e-superchargers.

I haven't had a chance to get it on a Dino yet but I'll tell you this, it will hit top speed (155 mph) a lot faster than it did before I did the e-superchargers and nineth fuel injector installation.

And if anyone is interested, 155 mph in my XLR is about half way through fourth gear.
I think that if I could re-program this car, I could use it to earn my Red Cap at the Salt Flats! (Life long dream.)

I took my XLR-V to 167mph during the 2009 Gumball 3000 before I had to back off the gas when a wheel weight fell off one of the front tires and I thought the car was going to rattle itself to pieces! ack!

Didn't get a chance to bring it back up to that speed again ever since... maybe someday :)

Thanks for the info Jack. Other than a build sheet from Bowling Green Assembly, about the closest info you can find regarding when your vehicle was built is on the back of the driver's side door, which gives the month/year of assembly.

155/167 mph is plenty fast! I took my CTS-V to 150 (once) and that was plenty. The ticket/rise in insurance would have been enough to add a supercharger! :lol

CC,
I checked the weight sticker on the driver's door and the date on it is 08/05. So I guess my car was built in August of 2005. So mine is actually an early 2006.
They must have been really cranking them out cause the way I see it, they built 164 before they built mine.

Thanks for checking on the mfr date Jack. I haven't heard of any 06's that could use the 1791 DVD unlock code and suspected yours may have been a late 05 build. That confirms it.

Is there anyone else out there with an '06 build date that accepts the code?

Does the 1791 code also allow you to use all the Nav functions while you are moving? Just checked mine, it was built 4/06 and no dice. Enter 1791, diagnostic screen goes away, no change.

Good question Steve, the only times I've used the 1791 code was to play DVDs and music videos while driving.
I don't watch the DVDs while driving but my passengers have. (My 5 year old Grand-daughter.)
I like to play the music videos because of the surround sound. They sound so much better that stereo CDs.

I took the XLR out for a drive and tried using the Nav System after inputing the code and it would't let me make any changes while I was moving over 10 mph but under that, as long as the "Enter Destination" button was lit, I could enter info. It seemed to perform the same with or without the code entered.

It is depressing,,, this is the most expensive car I have owned (08 V),, and I have owned many and customized many,, but the Nav/stereo system is embarrassing,, it's the one thing I avoid showing people about this car,, even the graphics on the Nav screen suck. Not sure who was in charge of that part,, but for $102,000,, I should no be way be paying a stereo shop to replace it with an aftermarket unit. There are cars that cost 1/4 that amount with a better unit.

After having this marvel for a short time. I've come to the same conclusion.
