I am seriously concidering installing a Viper smart start remote start. The installer at best buy says no problem, He's done a vette before. I think this would be cool but I dont want to cause problems. I had them put a remote start on the Allante and it worked flawlessly for years. Does anybody have any thoughts? CCclark? I would like this but I know these are complicated cars and I sure dont want to mess with it and have it cause problems in the future.

Do you know what year Vette the installation was performed on? I'll scope out the product, hit the books and see if I can come up with anything for you. You're smart to be cautious when modifying the electrical system on this vehicle! The alternative is . . . well, you know. . .

The cheapest SmartStart-compatible system I saw was the bare-bones Viper 5101 system for $249 msrp. It requires an additional XK07 CAN HighSpeed Interface module to complete the installation for an additional $109. There aren't any installation guides shown since they rely on Viper-authorized installers, but $200 ought to cover that. So for around $500 you can start your car up to a half mile away. You still need to keep your fob and emergency key handy just to CYA if the vehicle's battery should fail, so it isn't a true replacement, just a powerful supplement and tech-savy statement.
It looks very do-able though. I'd call Viper directly and ensure it's compatible with the XLR, and see if there's anything extra required. Their full-blown alarm systems with the Invisibeam Field Disturbance Sensors and battery backup systems are impressive. If you go for it, let us know how you like it!

OK, I guess I can end this here. I stopped by best buy today and talked to the installer, Nice guy. We looked up the wiring diagram. It said "not recommended for this car". We called Directed electronics and talked to tech support. They said they have not been able to get the system to work consistently with the push button start. I asked then about the Vette they used in the video. He laughed. He said they had to take it off that car. He said it would always start but sometimes it wouldn't shut off. In fact he said one time the had to let it run out of gas to get it to stop. Bottom line NO WAY. It was a cool thought though. I guess Trixie will stay in the garage on the real cole days untill she can live in Florida.

The part about having to run a vehicle out of gas to get it to shut off brings up an interesting point I had not thought of. If the push button system fails for some reason, what is the best way to shut the vehicle off? Is it safe to try and disconnect the battery with the vehicle running? Which connector should you disconnect, pos or neg? Just wondering.

No.
The alternator control systems will go haywire and put high voltage spikes into an expensive and sophisticated electronic system. Alternators need the battery to damp down and absorb transients.
At a guess one might try removing the fuel pump fuse. That will stop it.

Apparently you CAN put remote start in an XLR

Looked good in the video, I'd like to hear how things went after it was installed for a while. I've had issues with electronics that showed up later because of computer codes eventually causing error messages in the DIC. These vehicles have very touchy electrical systems, especially the older ones with the high and low speed buses. Hope it continues to work well, I'd like to get a remote starter installed.
