I'm considering purchasing an XLR, and I remember reading several people here say that you really do not want to own one unless there is a certified XLR mechanic at your local Cadillac dealership. What is the best way for me to discover whether the local dealership here in Austin has such a mechanic?

Also, is there much difference in buying a 2008-09 vs a 2004-06 XLR? What about XLR-V?

Is it also common wisdom that one would only want to buy a certified XLR from a car dealership, or is it okay to buy from private seller, as well, in your opinion(s)?

The easiest way to find out if a dealer has an XLR mechanic is to simply ask, not all do.

The major difference in the years you mention would be refinement, the later years have evolved and have become almost bug free.

As far as XLR opposed to XLR-V, I started with an XLR and then upgraded to a "V." The "V" not only has significantly more power it has other refinements the XLR does not have. You will lose the adaptive cruise if you go with the "V," some don't feel it much of a loss, I do. The economy of the "V" isn't much more expensive than the "X." The "X" may have enough power for your tastes, it's no lead sled.

The warranty is extremely important!! If you can dig up a good deal privately and it already has a certified warranty go for it as the warranty can be signed over to you.

I'm sure you will have more questions, there is plenty of info on this site to mull over.

I suppose the bottom line would be to buy the newest you can afford.

I purchased mine 2006V car from a private individual. It was certified and the warrantee followed the car. Now they have a prefered plan for oil changes and service for the first four years and I believe 50grand that you have to pay a 50 dollar transfer fee. I bought mine this year and really have enjoyed it. I do like the V for the power. The last trip I took to Fla. the milage once I got out of the hills was awsome. (27 to 28) I couldn't believe it!
