Just like motel 6, my xlr engine light has started staying on
all the time. I read in the manual, that if the gas cap does not lock
down all the way this will cause the code to malfunction.
also, hitting a rain puddle?? well, it's rained around here for 3 weeks,
and the cap twists on, but doesn't seem to seal perfectly,
any thoughts? Does your gas cap fit on really tight? or is it a little loosey goosey?
anyone else had the light come on after a lot of rain??
car was outside, as i don't have room in the garage for my collector car and the xlr??
Inquiring minds gotta know :cheers

You're right -the gas cap should be nice and tight. A modified cap is available (P/Ns are in here somewhere, but your dealer should know.) Mine went south earlier this year, and I'm in good company; it's a fairly common issue. Once the new cap was installed, I was good to go.
As for leaving the vehicle outside in the rain for extended periods, I wouldn't recommend it. Make sure your trunk seals are working and ensure your left side rear compartment (where the Folding Top pump is located) drain line is unplugged. The right side compartment on my vehecle didn't have a drain hole and had three inches of water in it when I bought the car! It had been sitting outside in the rain for a long time (Seattle area . . . ) also. That was my first mod.
The cap may even be replaced for free, (it's an emissions component) depending on your dealer.
Good luck!

I had the same problem with the gas cap. It was loose and eventually would not lock down without some fiddling around. I bought a new one and was amazed at the difference. It did cause the check engine light to come on as well.

I got a new cap last month. It was a big differance. If your cap clicks but spins easly that is probably it. The new one will click but it takes some effort. The old one clicked but it spun easly. A new one was only $12

Wanted to share my update, I called two local cadillac dealers,
found a new gas cap for 24.00. Replaced the old one,
(it snaps right on, easy) I was told by a friend the engine light warning
would go off, at a 150 miles, Sure enough, it reset when i turned 151 miles.
No other issue's as of yet. thanks everyone for the info..... :seeya

A small update. That 150 miles is somewhat variable. What is needed is three complete driving cycles that involve driving below 5 mph for a period of time (probably at least twice) having driven enough that your XLR is fully warmed up, the gas tank is between 15 and 85% full and a bunch of other things. For me, I have driven well over 250 miles with the 'service engine' lamp lit; as it happened I didn't go below 5 mph with the tank between 15 and 85% full for any length of time.
The reason for the below 5mph is that the PCM pressurises the fuel tank under those conditions and tests for the right pressure drops and rises at the right rate. This has to happen twice before it considers the fault to be present.
The fault code is P0455, major evap leak. It can be cleared with a Tech-2.
