: Oil Pressure
deadringer 09-16-2009, 05:43 PM When my 06 XLR-V idles... the oil pressure gauge reads 40 (about the middle).
When I rev the engine at 3k rpm or so and hold it, the gauge reads about 80. (almost pegged).
Does everyone else's do the same thing? Or is this just what my V does?
XLR_Lover 09-16-2009, 05:55 PM This is from memory as I'm on vacation.
As I recall the needle is at about 11:00 at idle and probably 1:00 when revving.

Mine is definitely sweeping to 3 o'clock when held at 3k rpm.
If someone would please try and see what there's does... I'm a little concerned there may be some sort of problem with my car. :(
STARBLACK225 09-23-2009, 07:02 AM Hey. Hope all is well. I checked my car and it does the same. So I would assume its normal.

majik755 09-23-2009, 07:48 AM Ditto for me, it's really high when cold, but then settles to 40 on idle when warmed. Then it pops up around 70 - 75 under acceleration.
deadringer 09-23-2009, 11:00 AM That makes me feel better... thanks guys!
AzGeo 09-23-2009, 10:00 PM 2008 with less than 10K miles. Idle cold, 10 o'clock. 2000 RPMs cold, 2.30. Idle hot, 9.30. 2000 RPMs hot, 12.30. I drive it under 2000 RPMs until it's up to running temps. Don't need to create oil leaks/crack exhaust manifolds or break gaskets. Hot above 2000 RPMs it will top out at 2.45 on the gauge. (6000 RPMs) Mobil 1 5-W-30. I'm going to 10-W-30 on next oil change. Just for the Hot temps idle numbers. (I'm in Az) H2O temps always under 210 (F)
STARBLACK225 09-24-2009, 07:05 AM Hey DR,
How do you like the Lingenfelter 170 T-Stat I mentioned?

I have it in... with a tune to adjust for it... and I'm not sure I can tell much difference. :nodno
I had my 05 in storage, had battery disconnected all ready for a long cold winter but then had to go get her out because i had it stored at my parents and dad had some medical issues and was coming home so i had to get a different place to store her for the winter. No problems getting her going but on the drive to the storage building the "low oil pressure" warning came on but when i look at the gauge it was fine, around 40 PSI, and seemed to be working right because has i idled down the psi would decrease and increase as the rpm's increased. i reset the warning light several times but with in a minute it was back on. Did that all the way, about 25 miles. Could it be just moisture from being in cold storage?

I would guess not. Usually (I'll have to check), a low oil pressure light (I need to check how the message is generated) is a separate switch from the oil pressure sensor (though mounted in the same unit), so if the reported oil pressure is fine, then it suggests that the switch is defective. This is unusual though as the switches are usually reliable. Certainly the normal wiring is for the switch to be closed with low pressure, so a condensation induced short would light the lamp, but, warmth will quickly drive moisture away and it is unlikely to be of sufficiently low resistance for a light to come on brightly (don't know about a warning message). Also, if the switch were sticking through lack of use, once it had opened, I would expect it to stay open.
It is (usually) not difficult to have the oil pressure switch assembly unbolted and replaced with a direct reading gauge to confirm proper operation of the sensor.
Did you check the oil level?
When did you replace the filter? If the filter is blocked there will be a bypass, maybe that is causing erratic oil pressure?
I have now checked the workshop manual (for my 2004) and there is no oil pressure switch, just the variable resistor in the sensor, so ignore the above.
Check all your wires under the hood. Mice like to get into the wiring. Check to see if you have any sign of them under thr hood. (Acons) left behind. I had simular problems wit another vehicles that i put in storage. I now put morth balls 12 -18 in little bags and put 10-12 bags under the hood of my XLR. Be sure to remove the large cover over the top of the motor so as to get that area covered with bags.
Has anyone else had mice or other animal problems?

Section 8 of the workshop manual is not really helpful, after basic tests it recommends using a Tech-2 to carry out a sweep test (of the gauge). You have already reported that that is working; the workshop manual then directs to look for intermittents (which could be applicable in your case).
Section 6 (Engine), offers a string of things to check for (foamy oil, diluted oil, faulty sender, wrong viscosity etc.), and connects tool J21867 to check oil pressure. It then offers a string of reasons for low pressure. If you are not suffering from valve train noise (the lifters are a good warning of loss of oil pressure), then maybe you have an electrical problem.
Given you have not run the engine for a while, just possibly you have some kind of oil contamination? Try an oil change.
The engine specification for oil pressure is 5psi or better at idle and 35psi or better at 2,000 rpm.

thanks for all the info...my car is back in storage until probably end of march the first of april. when i moved it the outside temp was probably around 20 degrees. the oil had about 1000 miles on it. i will have to check around to see if i see any signs of mice when i get her back out. i will post what i find in the spring.
