: Does anyone have this problem?
seniormoment 07-30-2009, 11:07 AM I have a 06 with warranty left until 14 feb 2010. My car has been in for top problems 5 time in the last year. I have contacted dealership owner and they, have a GM rep looking into situation. I feel that there should be some sort of offer made. I was offered a $1223.33 GOOD FAITH voucher for my problems. If you have had any recurring problems and contacted dealer or GM, what sort of offers were made to you? Need input as I have face to face scheduled for Aug 4.
ccclarke 07-30-2009, 11:28 AM A warranty doesn't guararantee you won't have problems with your car; it guarantees the dealer will fix them when they arise.
Your post didn't indicate if it was a reoccuring problem or a different problem with the top each time. If the dealer can't fix the same problem in a reasonable amount of time, that's an issue. If they fix your car and a new problem occurs, I fail to see how they owe you anything other than honoring your warranty. Offering a $1200 voucher seems pretty nice on their part. What "sort of offer" do you want from them? More facts please.
CC :cheers
seniormoment 07-30-2009, 11:38 AM The top continues to freeze with the trunk lid up in the air,(either in the down or up seguence) each time this happens they manage to replace a different sensor or reprogram the top.
XLR I FL 07-30-2009, 12:32 PM seniormoment:
I think what CC is saying is that there are fixes for the top but they need to be completed correctly.
There is a bulletin out on your issue and it covers the complete assembly.
If it were me the money wouldn't be the issue. I would want to be sure that a XLR Certified technician was working on the top and that he was experienced in the issues you are having.
See if you can focus them on getting the top fixed--permanently.
Get them to refer to this........

seniormoment 07-30-2009, 01:09 PM This is the bulletin that they worked from 7/15/09. I have operated the top twice since this was, so far so good, but because of the other times they have done other options, I no longer have confidence to lower the top unless I will be in a place that I will not be either at home or at my office, not a parking lot somewhere, I would like to trade the car in on a newer model. I would like to see an equitable solution to this lemon. I understand that I will not get a new car for free, but I bought this car because it was a convertible. I would like to use it as one. I have three other vehicles that I could drive if I just wanted to go from here to there.
ccclarke 07-30-2009, 03:19 PM First, the good news: Your top is working as it should. When the switches or sensors fail, the top automatically stops further operation to prevent damage. The bad news you already know: With five switches and three sensors, the top is probably the most trouble-prone system in the car. I've had my share of the same problems you're experiencing. If the sensors aren't bonded properly after replacement, they can shift position and give a false reading, which will stop operation. A top re-learn will fix it, --unless they shift position again.
Optical encoders instead of potentiometers would have been the more reliable way to go, along with a more robust multiple alignment pin setup that prevents the movement of the sensors, but it is what it is. Like the Saturn Five, many of these system components were contracted by GM to the lowest bidder.
That being said, would I ever operate the folding top at a long stoplight? No. My faith in technology is hypocritical where personal embarassment might be a factor . . . Murphy would undoubtedly pick that day to be my co-pilot.
Some folks never have problems with their folding tops, other vehicles are habitual problem children. I'm convinced that if a really knowledgeable tech spends the time to meticulously check the top, you'll end up in the former category. My top was removed a few months ago to be repainted. I was prepared for the worst when I got the car back, but it's been okay so far, with only one minor issue that I was able to resolve myself.
Once the sensors are positioned, bonded and their minimum and maximum travel voltages "learned" by the Folding Top Control module, the system is fairly reliable. It's aggravating, --I know, but working with the dealer to ensure you're satisfied is usually your best course of action. GM loses money on warranty repairs, so it's in their best interests to fix it right.
Still, your time is valuable too, --especially when you have to keep returning with a related problem. Let us know how the Aug 4 meeting turns out.
Good luck!

seniormoment 09-07-2009, 02:32 PM After the Aug 4 meeting, they kept the car at the dealership for a week. They checked everything. Sept. 6, went to put top up and it froze again just like before. Trunk lid up, "top not secure" message. I took to dealership today Labor Day, thet were open to sell more cars. I do not blame the dealership or the service dept. I feel strongly that they have done everything, they could, but I want satisfaction. This is now 9 times in a year.
I feel I am being put off by GM and Cadillac, region rep dosent't see it that way. WHAT NOW.:mad:mad:mad:mad
XLR I FL 09-07-2009, 06:54 PM I have to ask:
1. Where you are located?
2. What dealer you are using?
3. Is a XLR Certified mechanic working on your car?
Also, I there another Cadillac dealership located near you??
In a circumstances like this I wouldn't hestitate in requesting that the General Manager make contact with someone above your regional rep to see if they can resolve the problem.
Pleae keep us informed!! We're here to try and help and most all of us as CC mentioned have had some type of top problems

ccclarke 09-07-2009, 08:44 PM Nine top problems in one year strikes me as overly excessive, and indicates either bad workmanship, bad parts, or a cursed top. Have the dealer give you a list of each visits' problem and the fix that sent it back to you along with the date, if you haven't already made one yourself, and post it here. I'd be interested to see if there's a trend worth exploring (maybe with a different dealer.)

seniormoment 09-10-2009, 09:19 AM the latest from wonder car...
When they started the car, the dic was GERMAN.
I did not change anything. Can these wonderful diagnostic tools tell what time something was done?
I am very confused how this could happen when the car was not moved.
I cannot talk to anyone about this because the GM rep is working on it.:nodno
XLR I FL 09-10-2009, 12:15 PM You never know who was in your car while it was in the dealership.
So virtually anyone could have started pushing buttons and fooling around.
I hate that when it happens.
Please continue to keep us informed.
