: Exhaust Drone
XLR-Vette 06-14-2009, 09:12 PM Took a nice little 3 hour ride on Highway 80-90mph and noticed after getting out of the car my ears were like how your eyes get after being all day under florescent lights stobing as I guess we caLL DRONE. anyone else have this problem? When I had a Vette I changed the exhaust to Corsa maybe need to do the same on my V ?
cadxlr-v 06-15-2009, 11:08 AM You should not be getting any drone from the stock exhaust unless you have the baffles open. I leave mine open most of the time, but when on long rides down the interstate I close the baffles and have zero drone. It sounds like yours must be open all the time. Did you install a switch to control them or just cut the wire that controls them?
XLR-Vette 06-15-2009, 11:34 AM Baffles seem open all the time I didn't cut a wire or install a switch guess I'll ask the dealer what's up, Thanks for the input.

You can start the car and while it's idling look inside the exhaust tips to see if the two butterfly valves are open. If they are then you know you have a issue. Did you buy the car new or used? If you are not the first owner then it's posible the previous owner modified the exhaust to keep the baffles open all the time. One thing for sure it's not a blown fuse because the fuse that controls the baffles also controls the AC.
deadringer 06-16-2009, 12:41 AM I've had this happen twice on my V... both times the vacuum solenoid under the rear bumper has gone dead... both times covered under warranty

What do you think of the Tech 2 section???
Does work for you or do we need to make some more changes?

I guess its fine... I really don't have much tech2 experience (yet) so I don't know what I can add... :)
pamlicopirate 06-16-2009, 08:36 PM I had the corsa on my 06 xlr, just bought an 09 V. I miss the sound. I wonder if there is a simple way of installing an override on the baffle system.

There is... I did the mod on my 09. You can purchase a version of the Corvette "mild2wild" switch for the XLR-V that allows you to use a small wireless remote to open and close the baffles. It costs about 60 bucks and is easy to install. That's what I did and if you are interested let me know and I will give you the vendor info.
The other option is to splice into the wire in the rear of the car that controls the baffles and run it up to the console and connect it to a barrel switch to turn the baffles on and off.
deadringer 06-16-2009, 11:38 PM I've done the mod as well... :) works well.
Chucky Wheels 06-17-2009, 07:33 AM I have a 2007 XLR-V, I am looking at puting a exhaust system and cold air intake. What is the best stuff I can get?
XLR I FL 06-17-2009, 09:06 AM Chucky Wheels:
Welcome to the Forum.
D3 makes a good system that many members seem to be happy with.
Of course there are some other systems and as the members read your post they will let you know about their specific experiences.
The remote switch for the exhaust is a good change I am told. I haven't done it yet but may consider it soon.
STARBLACK225 06-17-2009, 10:17 AM Welcome! I have the complete D3 intake and Corsa Exhaust. LOVE IT!
Chucky Wheels 06-17-2009, 04:08 PM How much did all that cost you if you don't mind me asking? Did you just order it online? Did you notice a big difference?
XLR-Vette 06-23-2009, 06:38 PM Baffles closed when brought to the dealer but stayed overnight and Tech found them open in the morning. Seems he was able to locate a vaccum leak then.
pamlicopirate 06-25-2009, 11:35 AM Thanks for the info. I ordered and received the mild to wild switch. It only took 5 min.
to install and for the most part I prefer the open baffle sound to my corsa sound on my previous xlr.

No problem, glad you like it. I like the sound as well because it's not too obnoxious while still giving you that powerful car sound.

Congratulations on your new ride!!
There seems to be a growing number of us older members who are trading up.
Hopefully the "net deal" was good.......

Thanks for calling me an older member, most everyone else wants to know why an old man like me wants a car like that.:lol:lol

Anybody who asks why us "old guys" would want a car like this either doesn't understand why *anyone* would want one, or is young and has no concept about what getting old is like. (For them, a hint: those old folks you see slowly driving down the road in little old fords and little old chevys have spent their whole lives slowly driving down the road, albeit in less-old fords and chevys).
Now, I'll admit I've slowed a step or two, and close the XLR instead of a 5th Corvette because (among other things) I wanted a little more comfortable ride (well, ok, because my wife also wanted a little more comfortable ride). And, before we'd moved to Florida I'd run out of reasonable-distance Chevy dealers whose service departments I ever wanted to visit again...)
XLR I FL 06-26-2009, 10:03 AM Well I am there with you guys!!! I too had the Corvettes and now prefer the comfort and performance of the XLR-V. that's why I did it again because there aren't anymore of them out there new.
My response to the question is the famous response "Because I Can".
OH YEA I just picked up a new CTS for my wife because of all of the incentives and discounts out until 6/30.
It's the same color combination Black/Cashmere and LOADED with all of the extras.
So I'm doing my part to help GM out as are you guys.
Regards
JayInAtlanta 07-05-2009, 05:09 PM FYI, my baffles / butterfly valves are stuck open after a trip to Savannah. I'm on the way back to Atlanta and they've been open since I started the car this morning, when I stop for gas, etc. Guess it's dealer visit time as this is a first since I've had the car.

Just FYI, my vacuum hose was melted, and it's a backordered part. It'll be a while. Just for those who might encounter the same issue.

Melted?! how did that happen? where was it melted, and where did the heat come from? the exhaust?

Is there any difference between the Z06 version and the XLR-V version? I am picking up my V in a few weeks and this sounds like a neat idea.

Yes and no... The Z06 version plugs into the fuse slot that controls the exhaust butterfly valves. The XLR-V version has to be spliced into a easily accesible wire that is located in the trunk because there is no single fuse that controls the baffles. You use the same wireless remote to control the vales just like the Z06. The connection is the only difference.
XLR I FL 07-13-2009, 09:48 AM So in your asssessment does it provide more power or just more "throatly noise" all of the time when the remote activates it???

Yes, when the baffles are open the engine produces more HP and of course burns more gas.

Yes, I'd have to read the documentation (at home) or look under the car myself, but as I remember, part of it melted itself to a heat shield (ironically)!

I ordered the mild 2 wild switch for my XLR-V. I was wondering where the splice should be made? Is the a schematic or picture available?

Who does your service???? Mine goes to Capital.
JayInAtlanta 08-17-2009, 10:49 AM Who does your service???? Mine goes to Capital.
Classic, due to living in Decatur and working in Alpharetta (although not for long, about to become full time telecommuter and save the 80 mile/day commute). While my parts were being ordered, the service advisor left the dealership -- kind of sounds like a firing, but I don't know for sure -- and I have got a great new one.
BTW, thankfully the issue was fixed a couple weeks ago by a new hose and everything is sounding great at low RPM or with the baffles wide open now.
Onalaska 08-31-2009, 07:00 AM I don't think my baffels are opening up above 3500 RPM like they should. Can you hold in gear and hear the exhaust note change when you reach 3500 RPM? I did unplug the wire from the module located in the driver's side rear compartment next to the pump and the valves did open, I just never notice them opening when I step on the gas.

I have a mild to wild off my 08 ZO6 Vette that I would like to install on my 09 XLR-V. Does anyone know how I may do this? Thanks.
I removed the mild to wild from 08 ZO6 and tried to install it in my 09 XLR-V by splicing the wires as has been alluded to in this thread but it does not work. When I reinstall it in the Z it works fine. Suggestions/help? Thanks.
