This is not entirely true... 04-08 do not... 09 does.

If you have Verizon as a service provider you can piggy back your On Star car phone to your current Verizon plan. Cost is minimal and you share minutes within your existing plan. On Star is way to expensive as a stand alone provider for cell phone service.

When you piggy back do incoming calls to your vedrizon number come through the ONstar Speakers in the XLR?

Thanks for the response.

We switched all our Cadillacs to the Verizon package. It is much cheaper than purchasing minutes from OnStar, which do not rollover if you don't buy more. The phone works the same as always, you just have a Verizon number instead of the OnStar number.

The best thing about having Verizon is that you can add a line to your Friends and Family account for $9.99 per month. Then whatever plan you have shares your minutes.

The only downside is that your phone plan is now tied together with OnStar and you can't go to places like Best Buy to upgrade your phone to say a Blackberry Storm. I tried and they sent me back to OnStar.

Other than that, it is fantastic, great reception, you get an additonal phone number and it works. Good luck.

First a caveat, I was not using OnStar in my XLR. It is a 2005 preowned that no longer had an active OnStar account. The device I installed works through the OnStar capability of the XLR, meaning it uses the circuitry, microphone, speakers and buttons on the mirror. You will no longer have the "traditional" OnStar system available, it uses your cell phone plan.

The device I installed was the BlueSTAR PnP Class 2 kit from www.costartech.com

The installation only took about 10 minutes once I figured out which pair of connectors to use on the VCIM, there were identical white and black connector pairs on the VCIM. Thankfully, I bought my service manuals and looked at the wiring diagram, the white are for OnStar the black for the Navi system. At that point I just unplugged the white OnStar connectors and plugged in the connectors from the BlueSTAR device. Done deal, synched my IPhone using the Bluetooth setup screen, BlueSTAR automatically starts up in synch mode. Use the OnStar buttons on the mirror to answer calls. The emergency button is auto redial last number. Volume can be adjusted using steering wheel volume buttons. The BlueSTAR device automatically mutes the radio/CD player when making or receiving a call. Works great. Volume can be set loud for when top is down. Very happy with the device.

:coolHey majik755 :cool,
I've been waiting for someone to actually install the BlueSTAR PnP Class 2 kit from costartech. I really want to install the kit also, do they now have a actual installation directions on the web site? If not, could you take pictures of yours? I just don't know where start and where to connect too the on star system.

No, the instructions on the website do not describe the installation for an XLR. The directions are pretty vague, but luckily the actual installation is very easy on our car, as long as you find the VCIM and know which set of connectors to use. Once you get to that point, its plug the circuit board and module together (supplied in box), unplug the white connectors from the lower (forward) part of the VCIM, plug those onto the circuit board provided, and then secure the assembly and cover. I used the double face tape provided to secure it above the VCIM in from of the rear wheel, just have to ensure there's no metal to metal contact. The VCIM is metal, but the rest of the area is covered in rubber, so I just used some of the packing material between the unit and the VCIM. I'll took some pics but the forum limits don't let me insert them here, you can email me at majik755@cox.net and I'll send them in a reply to you.

No, it just uses the OnStar electronics to allow you to make and receive calls on the IPhone using its Bluetooth connection. That's why I also installed the IPOD interface that connects to the XM radio connections. That installation also allowed the the IPhone or IPOD to be connected and plays through the radio on the XM button with control of the IPOD and music directly through the radio and its speaker system.
