My engine light in 2004 XLR is on and I have waited for gas to cycle thru a tank and played with gas cap...Nothing seems wrong...can the light be reset?

There is a writeup on this in the Technical section. SOME of the owners have been able to replace the gas cap with a newer version and the problem was resolved.

There are codes that are stored that will give the technician a more exact assessment of what is happening if it continues.

You didn't mention if your car was under Warranty but if it still is I would get to the dealer and let them determine what the root cause is.

If not maybe the investment in a newer gas cap would be a good investment.

Please let us know how it turns out.

I experienced this problem two weeks ago and thanks to the forum, checked my gas cap right away--sure enough, it had loosened itself. I screwed it back into place, and still had the CHECK ENGINE warning light illuminated. After a few days of aggravation, I pulled the cap out and played with the spring, snapping the center of the cap into place a couple of times. I re-installed the gas cap and the light was gone! Following the advice of others who have had this problem, the gas cap was replaced with the updated version.
PN# 10372242 / $21.69

The same part is available online @ gmpartsdirect for 9.93 for anyone wanting to change it out themselves.

Good catch CC!!!!

$9.93 is a steal unless Cadillac will pay for it.

Just purchased a 2005 with 27k miles on it last week. The engine light came on yesterday. I called the previous owner and was advised that the same thing happened 2 months ago- but that when the car was taken to the Cadillac dealership- they replaced the PCM sensor- but the light stayed on. The car was returned to the dealership and they checked it top to bottom- but couldn't find a problem so they reset the light. The car drives like there are no issues. Do you think it could be the gas cap? The car is under warranty (Cadillac Extended) and that should be transferred into my name next week. Should I mention the gas cap to the dealer- if they can't find the problem??

My 2008 has always had a 'loose fuel cap', in that the cap does not tighten. it only continues to click, untightened. It has not shown any warning light and I continue to use it 'as is'.

Just got back from the dealer. They said the car gave them a PCM2 code and that they are "unfamiliar" with that particular code. It could be catalytic converter- or oxygen sensor. They aren't sure- but say the car is ok to drive as is. I just love car dealers...

Be sure that the dealer is XLR Certified. It does make a difference when resolving these type of issues.

I suggest a new gas cap for as CC put it $9.95. Cheaper than going to the dealer if it works.

Having the dealership tell you they're unfamiliar with a diagnostic code and sending you on your way, telling you the car is alright is not only embarassing but unprofessional. How do they know the car is alright if they can't interpret the results of the test?! If you haven't spoken to the Service Manager, I encourage you to do so. He may not even be aware of the situation, and I have yet to meet one who won't go out of their way to ensure his department's service was thorough. At a minimum, the tech should contact GM for guidance if they're "unfamiliar" with any aspect of servicing an automobile. Satisifed customers have a habit of returning.

Just my .02,

Went to a new dealer today and had them check the check engine issue and do the 27 point inspection. Here's what they found: negligible leak on the oil pan (covered by the warranty but they said it is so small as to not cause me any problems). thats it. they thought the engine light was due to the gas cap so they tightened it and reset the light. gave the car a clean bill of health. An hour later, the engine light was back on again. They want me to bring the car in and let them study it for a while- all the while telling me that they think it may be emissions problem and that that isn't covered on the warranty. I was told that it could be the catalytic converter going bad. I've got about 38 days before I have to get my license plate. Still think the issue is the gas cap?

Please be aware that the catalytic converter, powertrain control module and emission related software are covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles. So if they find that the trouble is related to any of these, it is covered. Your warranty booklet lists the parts that are covered under this warranty and those that are not. Good luck and hope it's the gas cap!

XLR14:

Please go get a gas cap and see if the problem goes away.

Got the gas cap today. Light came on about half an hour later. The dealership is now saying I need Oxygen Sensors- and that that will be covered by my extended warranty. The parts should be in on Monday. I'll keep you posted on whether or not that fixes it.
